About Vertex Engineering
Vertex Engineering P.C. is a New York professional engineering firm headquartered in Whitestone, Queens. We provide engineering design support, construction management, resident engineering, construction inspection, quality management, program management, cost estimating and project controls to public agencies across New York and New Jersey, on transit, bridges and highways, public buildings, schools, parks, water and housing. Vertex is led by its founder, a licensed Professional Engineer (PE), PMP and Certified Construction Manager (CCM), and is a certified Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) with NYC SBS and the Port Authority of NY & NJ. We are a growing, founder-led firm: you work directly with leadership, your credentials are put to use on proposals and projects, and good work is noticed quickly.
Position Summary
Vertex Engineering is hiring a licensed Structural Engineer to design repairs, rehabilitation and new structural elements for bridges, buildings, parking structures, retaining walls and waterfront structures, to lead condition surveys and structural integrity inspections, and to give structural support to our construction management teams.
You will take projects from field investigation through design, sealed contract documents and construction-phase support.
Key Responsibilities
Structural Design
- Design repair, rehabilitation and new structural elements in steel, concrete, masonry and timber for bridges, buildings, parking garages, retaining walls, piers and transit structures.
- Perform structural analysis and calculations to AASHTO LRFD, NYSDOT and NJDOT Bridge Manuals, ACI 318, AISC 360, ASCE 7 and the NYC / NJ building codes.
- Prepare and seal contract drawings, technical specifications, design reports and engineer’s estimates; coordinate with civil, MEP and architectural disciplines.
- Design or review temporary works: shoring, support of excavation, underpinning, protection of adjacent structures and staged construction.
- Perform load ratings (AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation) and evaluate structures for posting, strengthening or replacement.
Condition Surveys & Inspection
- Lead field condition surveys and structural integrity inspections; serve as Team Leader on bridge inspection teams.
- Evaluate deterioration (spalling, delamination, corrosion, section loss, fatigue cracking), assign condition ratings and recommend prioritized repairs with cost ranges.
- Prepare and seal inspection reports; perform QC review of other engineers’ reports.
Construction Support
- Review structural submittals, shop drawings, RFIs, means-and-methods and erection plans; witness critical structural work and advise the Resident Engineer.
- Develop field fixes and design changes when site conditions differ from the drawings.
Required Qualifications
- B.S. in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited program (M.S. preferred).
- Current New York State Professional Engineer license.
- 8+ years of structural engineering experience, including both design (sealed or prepared drawings and calculations) and evaluation or inspection of existing structures.
- 8+ years evaluating concrete structures within the past 10 years.
- Proficiency with structural analysis software (e.g., SAP2000, CSiBridge, RISA, STAAD.Pro, LEAP/RM Bridge or AASHTOWare BrR) and with reviewing AutoCAD/MicroStation/Revit drawings.
- For bridge Team Leader assignments: 5+ years of bridge inspection within the past 7 years, including 3+ years as team leader, and NBIS Team Leader qualification (FHWA-NHI 130055 or equivalent).
Preferred Qualifications
- New Jersey and/or New York - PE license
- NYC DOB Qualified Exterior Wall Inspector (QEWI)
- Fracture-critical (NSTM) inspection and bridge rehabilitation design experience
- PANYNJ, NYSDOT, NJDOT, NJ Turnpike Authority, NYC DOT/DDC or MTA experience
- ACI / ICC special-inspection credentials; OSHA 30; track safety training
