About Vertex Engineering
Vertex Engineering P.C. is a New York professional engineering firm headquartered in Whitestone, Queens. We provide engineering design support, construction management, resident engineering, construction inspection, quality management, program management, cost estimating and project controls to public agencies across New York and New Jersey, on transit, bridges and highways, public buildings, schools, parks, water and housing. Vertex is led by its founder, a licensed Professional Engineer (PE), PMP and Certified Construction Manager (CCM), and is a certified Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) with NYC SBS and the Port Authority of NY & NJ. We are a growing, founder-led firm: you work directly with leadership, your credentials are put to use on proposals and projects, and good work is noticed quickly.
Position Summary
Vertex Engineering is hiring a licensed Electrical Engineer to lead electrical design and construction-phase services on transit, public building and infrastructure projects: power distribution, lighting, emergency power, fire alarm, low-voltage systems and transit power.
Key Responsibilities
Electrical Design
- Design power distribution systems: utility services, switchgear, transformers, panelboards, feeders and branch circuits, emergency and standby generators, UPS and transfer switches.
- Design interior, exterior, site and roadway lighting and controls; perform photometric calculations (AGi32 or Visual) to NYC DOT/DDC and IES standards.
- Perform load calculations and short-circuit, protective-device coordination and arc-flash studies (SKM, ETAP or EasyPower).
- Design fire alarm, grounding and lightning protection, and low-voltage / communications pathways; coordinate traction-power and signal-power interfaces on transit projects.
- Prepare and seal drawings and specifications in Revit/AutoCAD; prepare engineer’s estimates; coordinate with Con Edison, PSE&G, LIPA/PSEG-LI and NYC DOB electrical filings.
Construction Management & Field Oversight
- Review electrical submittals, shop drawings, single-lines, coordination studies and test procedures.
- Review and approve contractor methods of procedure (MOPs) and outage plans for work on energized or in-service systems; coordinate outages with agency operations.
- Supervise electrical inspectors; inspect raceway, cable, grounding, equipment installation and terminations.
Testing & Commissioning
- Witness factory and site acceptance tests and commissioning of switchgear, transformers, emergency power, lighting, fire alarm and communications interfaces.
- Evaluate electrical RFIs, change orders and claims; support schedule and cost impact analysis.
Required Qualifications
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering from an accredited program.
- Current New York State Professional Engineer license.
- 10+ years of electrical engineering experience, including both electrical design (sealed or prepared drawings, calculations and specifications) and construction-phase services on public-sector projects.
- Working knowledge of NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, the NYC Electrical Code and NETA testing standards.
- Proficiency with Revit or AutoCAD and with power-system study software (SKM, ETAP or EasyPower).
- OSHA 30-hour Construction.
Preferred Qualifications
- New Jersey PE license (or obtaining it within 6 months — Vertex reimburses the fees)
- Transit electrical experience: traction power substations, 600 VDC, 13 kV/27 kV distribution, signal power or communications rooms (NYCT, LIRR, Metro-North, NJ TRANSIT, PATH)
- MTA / LIRR / Metro-North track safety training
- Commissioning certification (ACG, BCxA or NEBB)
- LEED AP; lighting certification (LC)
Why Vertex
- Founder-led firm: you report to and learn from a licensed PE / PMP / CCM, not layers of management.
