Job Description

Mentor A Promise is a New York City–based nonprofit serving children and youth (ages 5–18) experiencing housing instability, grounded in the belief that every child is a Promise—full of potential, dignity, and possibility. We deliver consistent, high-quality programming across mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning, and creative expression in shelters, schools, and community spaces, creating structured environments where students can grow, be seen, and build lasting skills. Through signature experiences like The Imagination Studio, The Kitchen Table, The Sound Lab, and The Story Space, we nurture academic development, emotional well-being, and creative voice, all within a trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and accessibility-centered framework. Our work prioritizes dignity-protective storytelling, consent-driven engagement, and deep community partnership, ensuring that how we serve is as intentional as whom we serve. We are not only addressing immediate needs - we are building pathways to confidence, belonging, and long-term opportunity, so every child has the support and foundation to carry their promise forward.

About Mentor A Promise Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, education, literacy, social-emotional learning, creative expression, career development, advocacy, and community-centered opportunity.

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in education, communications, technology, research, operations, creative work, and organizational decision-making, MAP wants to approach its use deliberately.

We want AI to expand human capability without weakening human judgment, privacy, safety, accountability, dignity, or trust.

Role Overview MAP is seeking experienced AI professionals to help build and strengthen our approach to responsible artificial intelligence governance.

The AI Governance & Responsible Innovation Advisor will help MAP develop practical frameworks for evaluating, approving, using, monitoring, and governing AI across the organization.

This is not primarily an AI development position.

It is a governance role for professionals interested in questions such as

Where should MAP use AI?

Where should we not use it?

What decisions must remain meaningfully human?

How should AI use involving children receive additional scrutiny?

What information should never be entered into particular AI systems?

How should teams evaluate new AI tools?

How do we identify bias, privacy, security, intellectual-property, accessibility, and safety risks?

What documentation and oversight should accompany higher-risk applications?

What should people know when AI meaningfully contributes to content, analysis, recommendations, or decisions?

The goal is not to slow innovation.

It is to make responsible innovation possible.

AI Governance Framework Help MAP develop an organization-wide AI governance framework.

Support development of structures addressing

  • Acceptable and prohibited AI uses
  • AI risk classification
  • Tool evaluation and approval
  • Human oversight
  • Data governance
  • Privacy
  • Cybersecurity
  • Youth safeguarding
  • Bias and fairness
  • Accessibility
  • Transparency
  • Intellectual property
  • Vendor considerations
  • Documentation
  • Accountability
  • Monitoring
  • Incident escalation
  • Periodic review

Help establish a lifecycle such as

Use Case → Risk Assessment → Review → Approval → Implementation → Human Oversight → Monitoring → Evaluation → Reassessment

Governance should follow AI throughout its use—not end when a tool is approved.

AI & Youth Safeguarding Help MAP think carefully about AI applications involving…
