Job Description

Job purpose

The Technical Design & Documentation Specialist is responsible for creating, organizing, maintaining, and controlling the digital drawing assets associated with the company’s equipment, components, facilities, and real estate portfolio.

This hands-on individual contributor role will help transform the company’s strong knowledge of its physical assets into an accurate, organized, and reusable digital asset library. The position will work with existing physical components, STEP files, AutoCAD drawings, supplier documentation, and input from internal and external technical resources to create and maintain drawings, models, component libraries, and related documentation.

The position will collaborate with engineers, architects, designers, manufacturers, contractors, and internal subject matter experts while serving as the primary internal owner of the resulting technical drawing assets. The role will also help evaluate and recommend the CAD, drawing management, and related tools best suited to the company’s long-term needs.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Create, modify, and maintain 2D drawings and 3D CAD models for equipment, components, assemblies, storage systems, facilities, and related assets.
  • Create accurate digital models and drawings from physical components, field measurements, STEP files, existing drawings, sketches, and supplier information.
  • Develop and maintain reusable component libraries, standard assemblies, rack configurations, and drawing templates to simplify future project design.
  • Support the documentation and ongoing development of robotic shuttle systems, Vertical Transfer Units (VTUs), storage racking, and future automation equipment.
  • Create and maintain project-specific equipment, rack, and system layouts using standardized digital components and assemblies.
  • Establish and maintain standards for drawing numbers, naming conventions, file organization, revision control, drawing status, approvals, and archival.
  • Maintain logical relationships between products, assemblies, components, models, drawings, specifications, and revisions.
  • Organize and maintain the company’s real estate drawing library, including architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, interior, construction, and as-built documentation.
  • Work with engineers, architects, designers, manufacturers, suppliers, contractors, and internal personnel to incorporate new and revised drawings into the company’s controlled digital records.
  • Support basic design evaluation using CAD and related tools, including fit, interference, clearances, tolerances, and other appropriate reviews, while coordinating with engineering resources when specialized analysis or certification is required.
  • Evaluate and recommend CAD, drawing/document management, and related technologies appropriate for the company’s equipment, manufacturing, and real estate needs.
  • Continually improve the accuracy, organization, accessibility, standardization, and reuse of the company’s technical drawing assets.

Qualifications

  • Degree or technical training in CAD, Drafting and Design Technology, Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, or a related discipline preferred; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
  • Strong proficiency with 2D and 3D CAD systems and experience producing professional technical drawings.
  • Experience working with STEP files, 3D models, and common CAD formats; AutoCAD/DWG experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to create accurate drawings and models from existing physical components, measurements, sketches, and other source information.
  • Working knowledge of technical drawing practices, dimensioning, tolerancing, materials, manufacturing processes, assemblies, and component relationships.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and an engineering mindset with the ability to understand how physical components fit, function, and are manufactured.
  • Experience with component libraries, drawing revision control, PDM/PLM, or structured technical document management is beneficial.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, construction, and facility drawings.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to independently take ownership of technical drawing and documentation initiatives.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a broad range of internal and external technical professionals.
