About the opportunity

Valley Bank is hiring a Director of Retail Network Strategy & Planning to shape the future of its branch network. This leader will determine where and how Valley invests in its physical presence, from new branches and relocations to remodels, consolidations, and new branch formats.

The role spans established markets in the Northeast, growth markets in Florida and Alabama, and newer markets including Los Angeles and Staten Island. You’ll use market data, customer behavior, and financial analysis to recommend investments that support growth, improve branch performance, and make banking more convenient for customers.

What you’ll do

• Develop a multi-year branch network strategy aligned with consumer, small business, and wealth banking goals.
• Recommend branch openings, closures, consolidations, relocations, and remodels based on market opportunity and performance.
• Analyze demographics, competitive presence, customer behavior, deposit flows, and drive times to identify the best opportunities for investment.
• Build financial business cases for network changes, including expected revenue, costs, ROI, and payback periods.
• Evaluate new branch formats and determine how physical locations should work alongside digital banking channels.
• Partner with Finance, Marketing, branch leadership, and other teams on network decisions, staffing models, and execution.
• Track branch and market performance through measures such as deposit growth, sales productivity, profitability, customer traffic, and market share.
• Present recommendations and results to executive leadership and the board.

What we’re looking for

• 10+ years of experience in branch network planning, retail banking strategy, distribution optimization, or a closely related field.
• Experience making strategic decisions across a large, multi-state branch network; experience with 150+ locations is preferred.
• Strong skills in location analytics, market analysis, and financial modeling.
• A track record of balancing growth, profitability, and customer experience in network decisions.
• Familiarity with regulatory considerations that affect branch strategy, including CRA and fair lending.
• Experience working across functions and presenting recommendations to senior executives.
• Exposure to digital banking or omnichannel transformation.

A high school diploma or GED is required. A bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or a related field is preferred; an MBA is a plus.

Compensation and benefits

The posted base salary range is $150,500–$272,700 per year . Actual compensation depends on factors including experience, skills, and location. The position may also be eligible for discretionary incentive compensation.
