Job Description: UI Designer (WPB (Wealth & Personal Banking), A Global Banking Client
Role purpose
As a UI Designer, you’ll craft clear, consistent, and accessible user interfaces across key retail banking and wealth journeys (e.g., onboarding, payments, cards, everyday banking, servicing). You’ll translate customer needs and product goals into polished, production-ready UI, working in agile squads with Product, UX, Engineering, and control partners to deliver trustworthy digital experiences.
Key accountabilities
- Design high-quality UI for digital journeys across mobile and web, ensuring simplicity, clarity, and brand consistency.
- Produce high-fidelity screens, flows, and prototypes (primarily in Figma), from concept through to build-ready specs.
- Apply aligned design system components and patterns, contributing improvements where gaps exist and driving reuse.
- Embed accessibility and inclusive design (WCAG) into UI decisions—typography, color contrast, focus states, touch targets, error messaging, and readable layouts.
- Partner with engineers to ensure designs are feasible and implemented accurately, supporting design QA and resolving build queries fast.
- Support regulated delivery expectations by considering privacy, consent, disclosures, authentication, and error states; help keep artefacts audit-friendly.
- Communicate design rationale and trade-offs clearly to stakeholders, keeping discussions grounded in customer outcomes and delivery constraints.
Knowledge, skills, and experience
Essential
- Demonstrable UI design experience with a strong portfolio showing end-to-end thinking and visual craft.
- Strong Figma capability: components, variants, auto-layout, prototyping, and structured file hygiene.
- Solid understanding of responsive design, interaction states, and visual hierarchy.
- Experience using and contributing to design systems and component libraries.
- Working knowledge of WCAG accessibility and inclusive design practices.
- Comfortable working in agile, cross-functional teams and managing multiple priorities.
Desirable
- Experience designing for retail banking / wealth or other high-trust, regulated consumer products.
- Familiarity with authentication and secure flows (e.g., step-up, device binding), notifications, and transaction journeys.
- Basic understanding of front-end implementation constraints (HTML/CSS or native patterns) and design-to-dev handover.
- Experience collaborating on usability testing and iterating based on evidence.
Typical deliverables
- High-fidelity UI designs for key WPB journeys (mobile/web)
- Interactive prototypes for stakeholder alignment and testing
- UI specifications/annotations (states, error handling, content rules, accessibility notes)
- Design QA feedback and implementation checklists
- Component or pattern proposals for the design system
Stakeholders you’ll work with
- Product Managers/Owners, UX Designers/Researchers, Content Design (where available)
- Mobile/web engineers, QA, delivery leads
- Risk, Compliance, Legal, Privacy/InfoSec (as required for WPB journeys)
- Design system and brand partners
Success measures
- Improved customer task completion and reduced friction (fewer errors, clearer guidance, faster journeys)
- Consistent, reusable UI aligned to the WPB design system and HSBC brand
- Accessibility built in by default, with fewer defects found late
- Smooth design-to-engineering handover and high implementation quality
- Positive stakeholder feedback on clarity, speed, and collaboration
Role level guidance
You’re expected to work with a good level of independence on defined problem spaces, proactively manage handovers, and contribute to squad delivery. You’ll raise risks early, seek alignment quickly, and help uplift UI quality through patterns and reuse.
