About The Role The Staff AI Engineer at Capital One is a highly strategic and technical role responsible for designing, developing, and deploying advanced AI systems that transform banking services. This position offers the opportunity to work remotely and collaborate with a cross-functional team comprising engineers, research scientists, product managers, and technical program managers. The successful candidate will lead initiatives that involve foundation model training, large language model inference, similarity search, and AI governance, ensuring these systems are scalable, efficient, and responsible. They will contribute to the technical vision and long-term roadmap of Capital One’s foundational AI systems, influencing the future of AI applications within the organization. The role emphasizes innovation in AI optimization techniques, leveraging open-source and SaaS AI technologies, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and scientific rigor. Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or AI with at least 8 years of experience in developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies, or Master’s degree with at least 6 years of relevant experience
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Go, Scala, or Java, with a minimum of 8 years of experience
• Experience deploying scalable AI solutions on cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure
• Strong background in AI/ML algorithm development, including large language models, similarity search, and vector databases
• Proven leadership experience in managing and mentoring engineering teams and influencing cross-functional stakeholders up to VP level
• Deep understanding of hardware and software optimization for AI training and inference
• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a relevant technical field (preferred)
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex AI concepts clearly

Responsibilities

• Partner with multidisciplinary teams to deliver AI-powered products that enhance customer and associate experiences
• Design, develop, test, deploy, and support AI software components, including foundation model training and large language model inference
• Implement and optimize AI systems using open-source and SaaS technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, Nemo Guardrails, and PyTorch
• Invent and apply state-of-the-art techniques for model optimization, improving scalability, cost-efficiency, latency, and throughput
• Contribute to the technical vision and strategic roadmap of AI systems at Capital One
• Ensure AI systems adhere to governance, fairness, and observability standards
• Mentor junior engineers and collaborate with stakeholders to drive AI innovation within the organization
