We are seeking an experienced Technical Writer III to support advanced aerospace and defense programs involving mission payloads, electronic systems, integrated aircraft, and space-exploration systems.
This is a structured-authoring position—not a traditional Microsoft Word–only technical-writing role.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop technical, operations, and maintenance manuals, test plans, procedures, and contractual documentation.
- Author and maintain structured XML content or S1000D data modules.
- Interpret engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, block diagrams, and CAD models.
- Work with engineers and SMEs to develop accurate documentation with limited direction.
- Manage documentation reviews, revisions, change control, and approved comments.
- Support modular content, reusable topics, conditional content, schema validation, and single-source publishing.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and 6+ years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Hands-on structured XML authoring—not merely familiarity with XML.
- Experience with Oxygen XML Editor, Arbortext, XMetaL, Structured FrameMaker, or a comparable platform.
- Advanced technical-writing and publishing knowledge.
- Experience developing technical, operations, or maintenance manuals.
- Strong Microsoft Word skills and proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint.
Highly Preferred
- S1000D experience, including data modules, DMCs, SNS, BREX, applicability, DMRLs, or CSDBs.
- Aerospace, defense, military, or DoD experience.
- CDRL, DID, government-acceptance, or ITAR experience.
- DITA, CMS/CCMS, component libraries, and single-source publishing.
- Git/GitHub, Markdown, or documentation-as-code experience.
- Adobe FrameMaker, CGM, SVG, or IETP experience.
- Candidates with hands-on S1000D or structured XML experience in aerospace or defense environments are strongly encouraged to apply.
