Job Description

Job Overview

We are seeking a senior-level COBOL/400 Developer with deep expertise in the IBM iSeries (AS/400) platform. In this role, you will be responsible for modifying, optimizing, and enhancing our core compliance applications to meet updated NYCRIB (New York Compensation Insurance Rating Board) workers’ compensation reporting standards. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in insurance reporting frameworks, batch processing, and DB2/400 database management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Enhance NYCRIB Reports: Modify existing COBOL/400 applications to incorporate updated data fields, calculations, and submission criteria required for NYCRIB compliance.
  • Maintain Codebase: Analyze, debug, and optimize legacy COBOL (CBLLE/SQLCBLLE) and Control Language (CL/CLLE) programs.
  • Manage DB2/400 Databases: Maintain data structures, write complex embedded SQL queries, and manage physical/logical files to support reporting modules.
  • Support Batch Processing: Troubleshoot, optimize, and execute high-volume overnight batch jobs, managing print spool files and transmission queues.
  • Execute Comprehensive Testing: Create robust unit and integration test plans to validate financial metrics and prevent data discrepancies in state submissions
  • Document Specifications: Maintain rigorous functional and technical documentation detailing system logic, data flows, and NYCRIB compliance updates.

Required Technical Skills

  • Languages: Strong proficiency in COBOL/400, ILE COBOL, and CL/CLLE.
  • Database: Deep knowledge of DB2/400, embedded SQL, physical files (PF), and logical files (LF).
  • Platform Utilities: Expert use of PDM, SEU, SDA, RDi (Rational Developer for i), and native interactive debugging tools.
  • Integrations: Experience handling file transfers (FTP/SFTP) and terminal emulation configurations.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience: Minimum of 5–8+ years of hands-on development experience on the IBM i (AS/400) platform.
  • Domain Knowledge: Prior experience working within the Insurance or Financial sectors, specifically handling Workers’ Compensation, policy, or claims data.
  • Compliance Exposure: Direct familiarity with statistical reporting bureaus (such as NYCRIB, NCCI, or state rating boards) is highly preferred.
  • Problem Solving: Proven track record of independently decoding, reverse-engineering, and repairing undocumented legacy systems.
