About the opportunity
We’re building meaningful interactive experiences in Unity — educational games, awareness simulations, empathy tools, VR/AR prototypes, or serious games designed to drive real-world impact and support our mission.
As a Volunteer UX/UI Designer, you’ll focus on the human side of these projects: making sure interfaces feel intuitive, emotionally engaging, accessible, and joyful to use. Your designs will help players/supporters connect deeply with the cause while enjoying smooth, thoughtful interactions.
This is a genuine volunteer position — unpaid, but offering substantial portfolio value, credits in public releases, mentorship, and the satisfaction of contributing to positive change. We adhere to UK volunteering guidelines (reasonable expenses like relevant software/tools may be covered if required).
What you’ll be doing (core responsibilities)
- Create user flows, wireframes, mockups, and interactive prototypes for Unity-based experiences
- Design clean, responsive UI systems (using Unity’s UI Toolkit, uGUI / Canvas, TextMeshPro, etc.)
- Develop high-fidelity visual designs, icons, buttons, HUDs, menus, onboarding sequences, and in-game interfaces
- Ensure accessibility best practices (colour contrast, scalable text, intuitive navigation, support for colour-blind modes, etc.)
- Collaborate closely with Unity developers, artists, game designers, and mission experts to align UX with gameplay and educational goals
- Conduct lightweight UX research: gather play tester feedback, analyse user journeys, iterate based on observations
- Build and maintain a consistent design system / UI kit within the Unity project
- Prototype new interaction patterns, transitions, animations, or accessibility features
- Document designs, handoff assets, and rationale for the team (Figma → Unity workflows)
Essential skills & qualities
- Hands-on experience designing UI/UX for games or interactive media
- Strong proficiency with design tools: Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, Photoshop / Illustrator (for assets)
- Solid understanding of Unity UI systems (UI Toolkit preferred, or classic uGUI + Canvas)
- Familiarity with basic Unity workflows (importing assets, understanding Event System, basic C# for UI logic if needed)
- Passion for user-centered design principles in games / simulations
- Genuine excitement about our cause and using interactive tech for social good
- Self-directed, reliable, and comfortable in async remote work (Discord/Slack + occasional voice calls)
- Right to volunteer in the UK (or equivalent international status)
Desirable (bonus points – not required!)
- Experience with UI animations in Unity (Animator, DOTween, LeanTween, or Timeline)
- Knowledge of game-specific UX patterns (onboarding, tutorials, feedback loops, progression UI)
- VR/AR design experience (spatial UI, gaze/interaction considerations)
- Playtesting facilitation or basic user research skills
- Portfolio with game / interactive projects (itch.io, personal prototypes, game jams welcome!)
