Job Description
About Greenbrier
Greenbrier Government Solutions, Inc. supports federal customers with cybersecurity architecture, engineering, risk management, and technology services. Our teams work alongside government leaders and technical staff to turn policy, risk, and operational needs into practical security outcomes.
The role
The Artificial Intelligence Engineer will help VA evaluate and govern AI-enabled systems with the same discipline applied to other high-impact technologies. The focus is AI security and assurance: understanding how a system works, how it can fail, what changed, and what evidence supports a responsible deployment decision.
What you’ll do
-
Assess AI-enabled applications, embedded AI features, models, data flows, integrations, and supporting infrastructure for security, privacy, safety, and operational risk.
-
Build repeatable AI assurance methods covering inventory, categorization, threat modeling, adversarial testing, data and model lineage, access, logging, monitoring, and change detection.
-
Evaluate model and system behavior for misuse, prompt or input manipulation, data leakage, integrity failures, unsafe output, bias, explainability limits, and supply-chain exposure.
-
Translate NIST AI RMF, current federal AI policy, VA governance, privacy requirements, and authorization needs into technical checks and decision evidence.
-
Review the design, training, validation, deployment, and monitoring practices used by product teams and vendors without assuming Greenbrier will train models on VA data.
-
Develop test plans, scripts, evaluation datasets where authorized, findings, risk statements, guardrail recommendations, and monitoring thresholds.
-
Work with security architects, data scientists, developers, privacy staff, system owners, and governance leaders to resolve AI risks and document accepted residual risk.
-
Track material changes to models, prompts, data sources, tools, and integrations so prior assurance conclusions are revisited when needed.
Required qualifications
-
At least 10 years of relevant experience in IT security, data science, or software engineering, including at least 5 years designing, developing, or deploying AI or machine-learning systems in enterprise or Government environments.
-
Experience building, training, and deploying machine-learning models and AI systems in production.
-
Experience delivering data-science, machine-learning, or AI projects in professional, research, or comparable settings.
-
Experience collaborating with data scientists, software developers, security practitioners, and domain experts.
-
Strong knowledge of data collection, cleaning, analysis, evaluation, and preparation for AI modeling.
-
Experience applying AI to real operational problems in large enterprises or Government agencies comparable in size or scope to GSA, IRS, DoD, or VA.
-
Master’s degree in artificial intelligence, business administration, business management, cybersecurity, computer science, information systems, information assurance, information security, information resource management, or a related field.
-
One or more of the following: IAT III, IAM III, or IASAE III qualification/certification.
Preferred qualifications
-
Experience with AI red teaming, model evaluation, generative-AI security, retrieval-augmented generation, MLOps, or model monitoring.
-
Working knowledge of NIST AI RMF, NIST cybersecurity guidance, federal AI governance, privacy impact analysis, and RMF/ATO processes.
-
Experience assessing commercial SaaS AI, embedded AI capabilities, or third-party models in sensitive environments.
What strong performance looks like
-
VA decision-makers can see what was tested, what was learned, what remains uncertain, and what guardrails are required.
-
AI risks are caught before deployment and monitored after approval as models, data, and integrations change.
-
Engineering and governance teams use a common body of evidence instead of separate, conflicting reviews.
Work arrangement and conditions
-
Full-time role; contingent upon contract award and customer approval.
-
U.S.-based remote work from a Greenbrier-approved work location. Routine onsite work is not expected.
-
Availability during VA core hours, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on normal federal workdays.
-
Occasional travel or onsite support for kickoff and other Government-directed events, with Washington, DC anticipated as the primary location.
-
Ability to obtain and maintain …
