AWS Backend Engineer

We’re seeking an experienced AWS Backend Engineer to build and maintain scalable, serverless microservices for our multi-tenant SaaS platform. You’ll design and implement cloud-native solutions using modern AWS services, write infrastructure-as-code, and ensure production systems meet rigorous security and performance standards.

Core Responsibilities

• Lambda Function Development: Design and build serverless functions in Python and TypeScript/Node.js for compute workloads
• API Development: Create and maintain REST APIs (API Gateway) and GraphQL APIs (AppSync) with proper authentication and authorization
• Database Design: Architect and manage relational (Aurora PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (DynamoDB) databases with multi-tenant isolation
• Infrastructure as Code: Write, review, and deploy Terraform configurations for AWS infrastructure across dev/test/prod environments
• Multi-Tenant Systems: Ensure organization-level data isolation, permission controls, and compliance in SaaS environments
• Code Quality: Maintain minimum 80% test coverage, follow linting standards (black, pylint, isort), and participate in code reviews
• CI/CD Pipeline Management: Maintain GitHub Actions workflows, automated deployments, and release automation
• Monitoring & Troubleshooting: Configure CloudWatch logs, X-Ray tracing, and create alarms for production systems
• Security: Implement AWS Cognito authentication, IAM policies, secrets management, and security best practices

• Compute: AWS Lambda (serverless architecture, cold starts, optimization)
• APIs: API Gateway (REST APIs, authorization, throttling), AppSync (GraphQL APIs)
• Databases: Aurora PostgreSQL (relational data, connection pooling), DynamoDB (NoSQL, design patterns)
• Networking: VPC (subnets, security groups, NAT gateways), VPC endpoints
• Secrets & Auth: AWS Cognito (user pools, OIDC federation), AWS Secrets Manager, IAM policies
• Monitoring: CloudWatch (logs, metrics, alarms), X-Ray (distributed tracing)
• Storage: S3 (object storage, lifecycle policies)
• Additional: EventBridge, SQS, KMS encryption, WAF, Lambda layers

Languages & Frameworks

• Python 3.11: FastAPI or Flask, async/await patterns, dependency injection
• TypeScript/Node.js 20.x: Express or serverless frameworks, type safety, async patterns
• Both languages: Can work across Python and TypeScript codebases

Infrastructure as Code

• Terraform 1.5+: Module design, state management, multi-environment deployments, plan/apply workflows
• Version Control: Git, GitHub, pull requests, branch strategies (main/dev/test/feature)
• CI/CD: GitHub Actions, automated testing, deployment pipelines, approval gates

Database & ORM Experience

• SQL: Database design, optimization, migrations, connection management
• Drizzle ORM (or similar): Type-safe ORM, schema management, migrations
• PostgreSQL: Advanced features (JSON, arrays, functions, indexes)
• DynamoDB: Design patterns, partition keys, GSIs, scan efficiency

Testing & Code Quality

• Python Testing: pytest, pytest-cov, mocking (pytest-mock, moto), >80% coverage
• TypeScript Testing: Jest, ts-jest, coverage thresholds
• Code Quality Tools: black (formatting), pylint (linting), isort (import sorting), mypy (type checking)
• Security Scanning: bandit (Python), tfsec (Terraform)

Software Engineering Principles

• SOLID principles and design patterns
• RESTful API design and GraphQL schema design
• Microservices architecture
• Error handling and logging best practices
• Git workflow and commit hygiene
• Code review participation and feedback.

Required Experience

• 3+ years of production AWS backend development
• 2+ years with serverless architectures (Lambda, API Gateway, managed services)
• 2+ years with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred)
• 2+ years designing and maintaining multi-tenant systems
• Experience with both SQL and NoSQL databases in production
• Proficiency in Python and/or TypeScript backend development
• Understanding of SaaS architecture, billing models, and compliance
