Job Description

Company Description:

BirdBudz is an AI-assisted bird health screening and reporting platform designed to improve how early observations are captured, organized, and shared across poultry, animal health, and wildlife settings.

The platform combines images with observations such as behavior, mortality, feed and water changes, timing, and environmental conditions to create structured reports for review by the appropriate animal health or operations team.

BirdBudz is non-diagnostic. The platform is designed to support earlier reporting, better information capture, and expert review—not replace veterinary judgment.

About the Role:

We are looking for an Applied AI & Product Systems Associate to help improve and expand the BirdBudz platform as it moves into broader real-world use.

This is a hands-on technical role that combines applied AI, computer vision, product development, data workflows, system evaluation, and product reliability.

You will help improve AI-assisted workflows, evaluate system performance, build product features, analyze errors and edge cases, and turn feedback from veterinarians, poultry operators, researchers, and other users into practical product improvements.

You will work closely with the founder and contribute directly to product development, testing, and field-validation efforts.

What you will do:

  • Develop and improve applied AI and computer vision workflows
  • Work with image, multimodal, and structured observation data
  • Build and refine features across web and mobile workflows
  • Support APIs, databases, data pipelines, and system integrations
  • Evaluate model performance, confidence, failure modes, and edge cases
  • Develop testing and quality processes for AI-assisted features
  • Investigate technical issues and improve system reliability
  • Integrate new models, data sources, and supporting services
  • Analyze real-world product usage and validation results
  • Translate user and domain-expert feedback into technical improvements
  • Document technical decisions, evaluation methods, and product changes
  • Contribute to pilot programs and field-validation activities

What we are looking for:

  • 2–4 years of relevant experience in software development, applied AI, machine learning, or product engineering preferred
  • Strong Python and software engineering fundamentals
  • Experience building AI or machine learning applications
  • Experience with computer vision, multimodal AI, or image-processing systems
  • Familiarity with LLM-based applications and modern AI architectures
  • Experience with APIs, databases, cloud infrastructure, or data pipelines
  • Ability to work across backend systems and product functionality
  • Understanding of model evaluation, uncertainty, reliability, and failure modes
  • Strong debugging and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently in an early-stage environment
  • Clear technical communication and documentation skills

Experience in animal health, AgTech, biology, veterinary technology, scientific applications, or production machine learning systems is valuable but not required.

A bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, data science, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent practical experience and a strong record of building working systems will also be considered.

Location & Engagement:

  • Remote, United States
  • Preference for candidates based in the Northeast
  • Occasional in-person meetings in New Jersey
  • Part-time or contract initially, approximately 15–25 hours per week
  • Potential to expand based on company needs and performance
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States
  • Visa sponsorship is not available at this time

What Matters to Us:

We are looking for someone who can turn AI capabilities into reliable products that work in real-world environments.

We care about what you have built, how you think about system behavior and failure, and how you approach real user problems—not just your job title or credentials.
