Job Description

ABOUT US

J Cohen Design Group is a growing Brooklyn-based interior design and architectural design firm working on high-end residential, commercial, and institutional projects throughout New York City and New Jersey.

Our work is tailored, detailed, and timeless. We are a small, hands-on team, so everyone is closely involved in bringing projects from the initial design phase through drawings, sourcing, construction, and installation.

THE POSITION

We are looking for a highly organized and proactive Interior Design Assistant to work directly with the principal and design team across multiple active projects.

This role combines creative design work with the coordination and follow-through required to get projects built. The right person will be comfortable working on drawings and presentations, sourcing materials, communicating with vendors, visiting job sites, and staying on top of open items until they are completed.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with design concepts, mood boards, material palettes, and client presentations
  • Source furniture, lighting, plumbing fixtures, hardware, stone, tile, fabrics, and finishes
  • Request samples, quotes, pricing, dimensions, and lead times from vendors
  • Prepare and update AutoCAD plans, elevations, reflected ceiling plans, finish plans, and millwork details
  • Create and maintain finish schedules, specifications, selection lists, and project trackers
  • Coordinate with contractors, vendors, fabricators, workrooms, consultants, and the internal design team
  • Attend site visits, take field measurements, photograph existing conditions, and prepare site notes
  • Track project deadlines, outstanding decisions, samples, approvals, and follow-ups
  • Assist with furniture installations, styling, punch lists, and project closeout
  • Organize the office material library and keep project samples properly labeled and tracked
  • Proactively flag problems, missing information, and items requiring decisions

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree or coursework in Interior Design, Architecture, or a related field
  • Approximately 1–3 years of relevant interior design experience preferred
  • Strong AutoCAD skills are required
  • Ability to understand architectural plans, elevations, dimensions, and construction details
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Excel, and presentation software
  • Experience with Rhino, SketchUp, Revit, Enscape, or similar programs is a plus
  • Strong eye for proportion, materials, finishes, and high-end residential design
  • Excellent organization, communication, and follow-through
  • Comfortable calling vendors, requesting information, and following up consistently
  • Able to manage multiple projects and shifting priorities without losing track of details
  • Reliable, professional, resourceful, and receptive to feedback
  • Available to work in person at our Brooklyn office and travel locally to project sites
  • Driver’s license and access to a car are helpful but not required

WHO WILL DO WELL IN THIS ROLE

You are creative, but you also enjoy the execution side of design. You are comfortable updating a drawing, building a presentation, calling a vendor, measuring a job site, and following up again when something has not been handled.

You take ownership of your assignments, communicate when something is unclear, and do not need to be reminded repeatedly about open items.

SCHEDULE

  • Approximately 20–30 hours per week
  • Typically 3–4 weekdays
  • Primarily based in our Brooklyn office
  • Local site visits in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and occasionally New Jersey
  • Opportunity to grow into a larger or full-time role

TO APPLY

Please submit:

  • Your resume
  • A portfolio or portfolio link
  • Examples of AutoCAD or technical drawing work, if available
  • A short note describing your experience, software proficiency, availability, and what you believe you would bring to the position

Final candidates may be asked to complete a short, paid skills exercise.
