Job Description
Director of AI Innovation
About the Role
We are seeking a Director of AI Innovation to lead the firm’s strategy for adopting and scaling artificial intelligence across legal practice. This role sits between firm leadership and practice groups, translating high-level AI vision into concrete programs, governance frameworks, and firmwide adoption initiatives. The ideal candidate combines legal fluency with a strong grasp of AI capabilities and change management.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and drive the firm’s AI innovation roadmap in partnership with the Chief AI Officer and firm leadership
- Design and oversee governance frameworks for responsible AI use, including risk assessment, ethics guidelines, and compliance with client and regulatory requirements
- Lead firmwide adoption initiatives for AI tools, partnering with practice group leaders to identify use cases and drive engagement
- Serve as a liaison between attorneys, Legal Engineering, Knowledge Management, and IT to ensure AI initiatives are practical, well-scoped, and effectively implemented
- Evaluate emerging AI vendors, platforms, and legal-specific tools; make recommendations on pilots and firmwide rollouts
- Develop training programs and communications to build attorney AI literacy and confidence
- Track and report on adoption metrics, efficiency gains, and ROI of AI initiatives to firm leadership
- Monitor the competitive and regulatory landscape for legal AI, advising on emerging risks and opportunities
Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience in legal innovation, AI strategy, knowledge management, or a related role within a law firm or legal department
- J.D. strongly preferred, with practice experience helpful for building credibility with attorneys
- Demonstrated understanding of AI/ML concepts and their practical application in legal workflows (not a technical engineering role, but strong fluency required)
- Experience designing or implementing governance frameworks, policies, or risk assessments for emerging technology
- Excellent communication and change-management skills, with a track record of driving adoption across skeptical or busy stakeholder groups
- Prior experience partnering with C-suite or firm leadership on strategic initiatives
What We Offer
Competitive compensation, a high-visibility seat at the table for one of the firm’s top strategic priorities, and the opportunity to shape how AI is governed and adopted across the practice.
