Job Summary:

In this role, you will design, develop, and improve backend systems to meet user needs and business objectives. You will work through ambiguous requirements, contribute to clear specifications, leverage AI tools to rapidly build and refine high-quality code, and collaborate cross-functionally to deliver scalable backend solutions. Your role will involve debugging and improving existing systems, ensuring optimal performance, and integrating new features to enhance functionality. With a strong foundation in systems thinking and adaptability, you will continuously improve how software is designed, built, and operated in an AI-assisted development environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and Own Systems:

Design and evolve backend architecture end-to-end, including APIs, data models, and storage. Establish clear specifications, contracts and behaviors that enable reliable scaling and effective AI-assisted development. Contribute to architectural decisions and communicate tradeoffs across simplicity, performance, and long-term maintainability.

Leverage AI to Write High-Quality Code:

Use AI tools to generate, iterate on, and refine implementations, producing clean, maintainable code aligned with established specifications and Rakuten engineering standards. Exercise strong judgment in evaluating and validating AI-generated output.

Collaborate:

Work across engineering, product, and design to navigate ambiguous problems, shape technical direction, and align on priorities and tradeoffs.

Help shape what should be built, not just how it is implemented, with a focus on delivering meaningful user and business impact.
