Job Description
Mechanical Engineer – Rugged Device Design (Plastics & Enclosures)
We are seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer with experience designing rugged electronic devices for demanding industrial, military, transportation, or commercial environments. This role will focus on developing durable plastic enclosures and mechanical assemblies that protect advanced electronic systems while meeting stringent environmental and reliability requirements.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience designing injection molded plastic parts, integrating electronics into rugged housings, and taking products from concept through manufacturing.
Responsibilities
- Design rugged mechanical enclosures for electronic products using 3D CAD software.
- Develop injection molded plastic components optimized for manufacturability, durability, and cost.
- Design internal mechanical structures for PCB mounting, cable management, connectors, displays, batteries, and thermal components.
- Create detailed engineering drawings, tolerance analyses, and GD&T documentation.
- Perform structural analysis and design validation for shock, vibration, drop, and environmental requirements.
- Collaborate with electrical, RF, manufacturing, and industrial design teams throughout product development.
- Work with suppliers and tooling manufacturers during prototype and production tooling development.
- Support prototype builds, product testing, troubleshooting, and design improvements.
- Participate in design reviews and continuous product improvement initiatives.
- Ensure products meet applicable regulatory and environmental requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- 3+ years of mechanical product design experience.
- Experience designing rugged electronic devices or embedded systems.
- Strong knowledge of plastic part design and injection molding.
- Proficiency with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor, or similar).
- Experience creating production drawings using GD&T.
- Understanding of DFM (Design for Manufacturability) and DFA (Design for Assembly).
- Knowledge of mechanical tolerancing and material selection.
- Experience supporting products from concept through production.
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing products to IP65/IP67/IP68 environmental standards.
- Familiarity with MIL-STD-810, IEC, UL, or similar ruggedization standards.
- Experience with thermal management techniques for electronic assemblies.
- Knowledge of die-cast metal components and sheet metal design.
- Experience with gasket design, sealing methods, and waterproof enclosures.
- Familiarity with vibration isolation and shock protection methods.
- Experience working with contract manufacturers and overseas suppliers.
- Understanding of electronics packaging and PCB mechanical integration.
