Humor Genome NYC is looking for AI builders who want to join a live hackathon in New York City and help make it stronger.

This is a short-term hackathon role for someone who wants to build, experiment, meet other creative technologists, and contribute to an unusual AI challenge. You do not need a traditional AI engineering background, but you should be comfortable prototyping with AI tools, learning quickly, and helping turn an idea into something demoable.

Humor Genome NYC is part of Build with Gemma. Online submissions are open now, and selected finalists will present live in New York City on July 25.

The core challenge is to explore whether AI can understand, evaluate, or generate humor in a way that feels meaningfully human.

What you might do

You may help with one or more of the following:

• Build or join a hackathon project
• Prototype with Gemma, LLMs, agents, evaluation tools, or creative AI workflows
• Help participants shape stronger submissions
• Recruit AI builders, students, designers, comedians, and creative technologists
• Support finalists before the live event
• Help with demos, judging flow, event-day coordination, or technical troubleshooting
• Capture interesting ideas, projects, and stories from the event

Who this is for

This could be a good fit if you are:

• An AI engineer, ML engineer, software engineer, data scientist, technical student, or creative technologist
• A builder who enjoys hackathons, prototypes, and fast-moving projects
• Curious about creative AI, humor, evaluation, human feedback, or interactive demos
• Based in NYC or able to attend the July 25 live event
• Interested in participating in the hackathon and optionally helping behind the scenes

What we are looking for

We care more about curiosity, taste, and execution than credentials.

Strong candidates will be able to:

• Build quickly with modern AI tools
• Communicate clearly with technical and non-technical people
• Help bring good people into the hackathon
• Stay reliable in the final stretch before the event
• Contribute before July 25, not only on event day

Compensation

This role includes a $100-$500 project stipend , depending on contribution level.

This is a short-term hackathon role, not a traditional full-time engineering job. The stipend will depend on how involved you are before the event, whether you support the live event, and whether you take on meaningful ownership around outreach, participant support, technical help, or project building.

Time commitment

We are open to different levels of involvement, from a few focused hours to a more active role before and during the July 25 event.
