Job Description

Full-Stack Software Engineer — React, AWS and Geospatial DataAbout the roleWe are seeking a Full-Stack Software Engineer to build and maintain a web application for exploring water and watershed data. The application has a React and TypeScript frontend, a backend service hosted on AWS App Runner, and AWS Lambda functions that retrieve updated information from the RIBITS data source on an overnight schedule. The frontend is hosted on AWS Amplify and uses Mapbox to present HUC map data.The backend has been built with Django, though a move to Ruby on Rails may be underway. The ideal candidate has solid experience with at least one of these frameworks and can contribute effectively as the project’s direction is finalized.Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain backend services and APIs using Ruby on Rails.
• Build and enhance user-facing features using React and TypeScript.
• Connect frontend workflows to backend APIs and external data sources.
• Develop and support AWS Lambda functions that retrieve and process the latest RIBITS data overnight.
• Improve the reliability of scheduled jobs through appropriate logging, retries, validation, and failure handling.
• Deploy and operate the backend through AWS App Runner and the frontend through AWS Amplify.
• Integrate Mapbox with HUC data to support interactive geographic visualization.
• Write and maintain automated tests, participate in code reviews, and troubleshoot issues across the application.
• Collaborate with the team on technical decisions, including any backend framework migration.

Required qualifications

• Professional experience building web applications with  Ruby on Rails.
• Strong experience with React and TypeScript.
• Experience building and consuming web APIs.
• Working experience with AWS Lambda and scheduled or batch processing.
• Familiarity with deploying or operating applications using AWS App Runner and AWS Amplify, or closely related AWS services.
• Experience integrating third-party data sources and handling data validation and transformation.
• Experience with Mapbox or another web mapping platform.
• Clear communication and the ability to work with an existing application and codebase.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience with both Django and Ruby on Rails, or experience supporting a framework migration.
• Experience with watershed, HUC, environmental, or other geospatial data.
• Familiarity with GeoJSON and common mapping data concepts.
• Experience with CloudWatch, EventBridge, IAM, S3, or other AWS services that support application hosting and data pipelines.
• Experience monitoring and operating production data ingestion jobs.
