Job Description
AI Biologist – Genetic Medicines (In Partnership with LatchBio)
**Full-Time Remote United States**We’re partnering exclusively with LatchBio , a rapidly growing AI-driven biotechnology company, to recruit an AI Biologist specialising in Genetic Medicines.
LatchBio is developing rigorous scientific benchmarks for AI agents, working alongside leading pharmaceutical companies and frontier AI laboratories to evaluate how effectively AI models can navigate complex biological workflows and solve real-world scientific problems.
This is an opportunity to apply your expertise in gene therapy, gene editing or RNA therapeutics at the intersection of genetic medicines and frontier AI, helping establish the standards against which advanced AI systems are evaluated.
The Opportunity
You’ll use your scientific expertise across the genetic medicines development pipeline to design challenging scientific evaluations, interpret complex preclinical datasets and assess whether AI-generated conclusions are scientifically and pharmacologically defensible.
Working alongside scientists and software engineers, you’ll help build realistic research tasks and datasets that test whether AI agents can make the same critical decisions as experienced genetic medicines scientists.
This is a science-first position where hands-on industry experience, strong scientific judgement and the ability to interpret complex experimental data are more important than advanced programming expertise.
Key Responsibilities
- Build the benchmark: Develop scientifically rigorous research problems and case studies across gene therapy, gene editing and RNA therapeutics, translating real-world drug development workflows into challenging AI evaluations.
- Interpret complex data: Analyse and interpret preclinical datasets covering potency, specificity, biodistribution, PK/PD, immunogenicity, off-target activity and toxicology.
- Make the hard calls: Evaluate candidate selection, dose optimisation, safety profiles and development decisions, identifying the trade-offs that determine whether a programme should advance or be discontinued.
- Evaluate AI reasoning: Critically assess AI-generated scientific conclusions, identifying flawed assumptions, unsupported claims and reasoning that may be technically correct but scientifically unsound.
- Reconstruct development decisions: Use evidence from multiple data sources to establish defensible go/no-go decisions across the genetic medicines pipeline.
- Collaborate with experts: Work alongside scientists and engineers to develop, refine and improve AI-driven scientific evaluation workflows.
What We’re Looking For
- Advanced degree (PhD, MS, PharmD or equivalent research experience) in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Gene Therapy, Genetic Engineering, Pharmacology or a related biomedical discipline.
- 3+ years of hands-on industry experience in the discovery or development of at least one genetic medicine modality:
- Gene therapy (AAV, lentiviral or other viral/non-viral delivery platforms).
- Gene editing (CRISPR/Cas systems, base editing, prime editing or related technologies).
- RNA therapeutics (ASO, siRNA, mRNA or other oligonucleotide-based therapies).
- Direct experience with drug design, candidate screening, delivery optimisation or IND-enabling development.
- Experience analysing and interpreting preclinical data, including on/off-target editing, biodistribution, immunogenicity, PK/PD and GLP toxicology.
- Understanding of potency, specificity, safety and developability trade-offs when evaluating genetic medicine candidates.
- Strong scientific reasoning and the ability to formulate evidence-based recommendations around candidate progression, dose selection and development risks.
- Excellent scientific writing skills, with the ability to communicate complex findings and justify scientific decisions clearly.
- Familiarity with AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude or similar, with the judgement to identify when AI-generated conclusions are scientifically inaccurate or impractical.
- Confidence to challenge AI-generated conclusions, recognise uncertainty and identify gaps in available evidence.
Desirable: Experience preparing or reviewing IND-enabling nonclinical packages, familiarity with FDA/EMA regulatory expectations, and experience working across multiple genetic medicine modalities.
