Job Description

• Part-time
• Under 20 hours a week, you choose when
Check the inspection calls that teach AI systems about manufacturing and materials, part-time and on your own schedule.
AI systems for manufacturing and materials engineering learn from examples reviewed by inspection professionals. The teams building them need metallurgists and welding inspectors who can judge whether a material, weld, coating or additive build meets its acceptance criteria, and write down the reasoning behind each call. This is remote, part-time contractor work applying your metallurgy and welding inspection expertise to AI review.
What you’ll do
• Judge metallographic microstructures and heat treatment evidence against acceptance requirements
• Assess weld macros and coating inspection records against CWI, NACE/AMPP and SSPC criteria
• Determine whether materials, additive manufacturing builds, weldments and coatings meet requirements, and document the technical decision
• Disposition defects found in laser powder bed fusion builds, using build data and cross-sections
Why this is worth your time
• Build practical AI evaluation skills while earning $40–$60 an hour reviewing inspection decisions
• Apply metallurgy and welding inspection standards to AI review, case by case
• Write up each accept or reject call with clear technical reasoning
• Fully remote and flexible, no fixed shifts, no commute
Who this is for
• At least eight years of experience reviewing fracture surfaces, coatings, micrographs, additive builds made by laser powder bed fusion and weld macros, and deciding whether the work meets requirements
• Advanced knowledge of standards from NACE/AMPP, SSPC, ASTM, AMS, AWS and NADCAP
• Professional fluency in English; strong technical writing and verbal communication, with clear explanations of how inspection judgments are reached
• Helpful background includes an AWS Certified Welding Inspector credential (current or prior) or a comparable metallurgical certification; prior AI training work is not required.
Pay and details
• $40–$60 per hour, paid hourly as an independent contractor
• Part-time, flexible schedule; fully remote, United States
