Job Description

Lead AI & Data Engineer – AI Agents & Automation

📍 Waltham, Greater Boston, MA | On-site Monday–Thursday, WFH Friday

💼 Full-time Reporting directly to the Managing Partner

About the Firm

Our client is a leading private equity firm with a strong track record of building and scaling successful businesses. They’re investing in AI and automation to transform internal operations, improve efficiency and ultimately drive innovation across their portfolio companies.

The Opportunity

We’re looking for a highly hands-on Lead AI & Data Engineer with strong expertise in data architecture, software engineering and agentic AI to build the firm’s internal AI capabilities from the ground up.

This is a builder role, not a strategy or people-management position.

You’ll work directly with senior leadership to identify opportunities for automation, design the underlying data architecture and develop AI agents that streamline complex business processes.

Initially, you’ll focus on automating finance and operational workflows within the management company, with significant potential to expand AI capabilities across the wider portfolio.

What You’ll Do

  • Data Architecture: Design and build scalable data architectures, pipelines and integrations that connect internal databases, financial platforms and business systems.
  • AI Agents & Automation: Develop and deploy production-grade AI agents to automate complex, multi-step business workflows.
  • Systems Integration: Connect LLMs and AI applications with existing systems, APIs, structured and unstructured data sources.
  • Data Engineering: Build reliable data pipelines, ETL/ELT processes, data models and workflows to support AI applications and reporting.
  • Finance Automation: Automate accounts receivable, invoicing, reconciliations, expense management and financial reporting.
  • Production Engineering: Implement monitoring, evaluation, security, access controls and human-in-the-loop processes.
  • End-to-End Ownership: Take projects from initial discovery and architecture through development, deployment and ongoing improvement.

You’ll work with financial systems including QuickBooks, Ramp, Allvue and Chronograph .

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong data architecture experience — designing databases, data models, pipelines and scalable architectures that integrate multiple enterprise systems.
  • Excellent software engineering skills, particularly Python and SQL .
  • Experience building and deploying production-grade AI applications using LLMs such as OpenAI or Anthropic.
  • Hands-on experience developing AI agents, agentic workflows and automation systems .
  • Strong understanding of data engineering, ETL/ELT, APIs, backend architecture and systems integration .
  • Experience with RAG, embeddings, vector databases and retrieval systems.
  • Cloud infrastructure experience (AWS, Azure or GCP), containerisation and production deployment.
  • Ability to design secure, reliable and maintainable systems handling sensitive business and financial data.
  • Comfortable working independently, making architectural decisions and owning solutions end to end.
  • Strong communication skills and confidence working directly with senior business stakeholders.

Experience with LangGraph, LangChain, LlamaIndex or similar frameworks is advantageous.

Why Join?

This is an opportunity to build an AI and data engineering function from the ground up , with direct access to senior leadership and significant technical ownership.

You’ll have the freedom to design the architecture, select technologies and deliver AI solutions that make a measurable impact on the business.

The longer-term opportunity extends beyond the management company into the firm’s wider portfolio, offering substantial scope for growth and progression.

Important Requirements

Location: Waltham, MA — four days on-site, Fridays remote.
