Job Description
CAD & 3D Modelling Technician – Drone Data & Photogrammetry
About Media4You
Media4You provides professional drone operations, aerial data and consultancy services across the Isle of Wight, Hampshire and other UK locations by arrangement.
Our drone services include photogrammetry, three-dimensional models, aerial measurements, orthophotos, digital surface and terrain models, stockpile measurements, construction monitoring, inspections, thermal imaging and development visualisation.
We are looking for a technically capable CAD and 3D Modelling Technician to help transform drone-captured data into accurate, polished and practical client deliverables.
About the role
Media4You will undertake the drone operation and process the captured imagery into the initial outputs, which may include point clouds, textured meshes, orthophotos, elevation models and other geospatial files.
The successful candidate will take these outputs and develop them into clean, usable and professionally presented CAD and 3D assets.
The work may involve cleaning photogrammetry models, defining project boundaries, removing unwanted geometry, producing drawings and measurements, reconstructing poorly captured areas, optimising large models and adding proposed structures or design elements to show how a location could look following future development.
This role combines CAD, 3D modelling, visualisation and geospatial data. It would suit someone with experience in CAD, architecture, construction, surveying, game-environment development or technical 3D design who wants to work within a growing specialist area.
Key responsibilities
- Importing and working with drone-derived point clouds, meshes, orthophotos and elevation data.
- Handling formats such as OBJ, FBX, PLY, E57, LAS/LAZ, GeoTIFF, DXF and DWG.
- Cleaning photogrammetry meshes and removing floating geometry, rough edges, holes and other processing artefacts.
- Defining project boundaries and removing irrelevant surroundings from models.
- Simplifying and optimising large models while retaining the detail required by the client.
- Preserving the correct scale, orientation and coordinate information within supplied datasets.
- Producing clear 2D and 3D CAD drawings from drone-captured information.
- Creating site plans, roof plans, external elevations, sections, contours, surfaces and other project-specific outputs.
- Modelling buildings, structures, terrain and external site features.
- Converting point-cloud or mesh information into clean CAD geometry where required.
- Extracting and presenting measurements supported by the supplied dataset.
- Adding proposed buildings, extensions, infrastructure, landscaping or other design elements to existing site models.
- Producing before-and-after views and development visualisations.
- Ensuring that proposed or illustrative elements remain clearly distinguishable from captured real-world data.
- Applying or repairing textures where appropriate.
- Preparing models for online viewers, client presentations, further design work or 3D printing.
- Creating still renders, annotated views and other presentation material.
- Advising Media4You where additional imagery or data may be required to complete a model properly.
- Completing quality checks before work is issued to a client.
- Recording any limitations, assumptions or changes made during the modelling process.
- Responding to reasonable revisions and client feedback.
- Maintaining organised project folders, version control and secure handling of client information.
Essential skills and experience
The successful candidate should have:
- Practical experience using CAD or professional 3D-modelling software.
- Experience importing, editing and exporting common 3D file formats.
- A good understanding of scale, dimensions, coordinates and model accuracy.
- The ability to interpret drawings, measurements and technical project briefs.
- An understanding of meshes, point clouds, textures, materials and polygon optimisation.
- Strong spatial awareness and attention to detail.
- The ability to distinguish between measured information, reconstructed geometry and illustrative design work.
- Good file-management and version-control practices.
- The ability to manage large and technically demanding project files.
- Clear written and verbal communication.
- The ability to work independently while raising questions when project requirements or source data are unclear.
- A portfolio or examples demonstrating …
