Job Description

Role Summary

As a Principal Engineer, UI in Global Data Foundation (GDF), you are the senior technical owner of the

front-end architecture behind the tools, dashboards, and portals that make our data products usable — for

internal teams tracking data quality and delivery status, and for partner orgs consuming GDF data assets.

You operate with significant autonomy, turning ambiguous UX and platform problems into clean, scalable

front-end architecture, and you raise the engineering bar for everyone building UI around you. This is a

hands-on, high-impact individual-contributor role: you’ll write and review code, lead design reviews, unblock

cross-team dependencies between UI, API, and design teams, and be the technical voice our partners trust

when the stakes are high.

What You’ll Do

  • Own end-to-end front-end architecture for GDF’s internal and partner-facing tools — status dashboards,

data quality/observability consoles, self-service portals, and admin tooling.

  • Lead the design and implementation of scalable, maintainable front-end systems: component libraries,

shared design-system usage, and micro-frontend patterns where appropriate.

  • Partner with Product, UX/Design, and backend/data engineering teams to translate requirements into

performant, accessible, delightful user experiences.

  • Drive adoption of Walmart’s Living Design system and WCAG 2.2 Level AA accessibility standards

consistently across all GDF UI surfaces.

  • Lead code and design reviews across the team; set front-end engineering standards for performance,

testing, accessibility, and code quality.

  • Mentor Senior and Staff front-end engineers, helping them grow their technical judgment and

architectural scope.

  • Resolve complex, cross-team UI blockers — API contract mismatches, design-system gaps, inconsistent

data contracts from upstream services — and drive them to resolution with a clear owner and next step.

  • Own front-end performance (load times, rendering, bundle size) and reliability (error monitoring,

observability) for GDF’s UI surfaces.

  • Evaluate and introduce new front-end tools, frameworks, or patterns that meaningfully improve delivery

velocity or user experience quality.

  • Represent GDF UI engineering in cross-org architecture and design-system reviews.

What You Will Bring

  • 12+ years of professional front-end/UI engineering experience, including large-scale production web

applications used by real end users.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical

experience).

  • Expert-level proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and a modern component framework (React strongly preferred).
  • Deep experience with component-driven architecture, design systems, and state management (Redux,

Context API, or similar).

  • Strong understanding of web performance optimization, responsive design, and accessibility (WCAG

2.1/2.2 Level AA) — not as an afterthought, but as a design constraint from day one.

  • Experience with front-end testing frameworks (Jest, React Testing Library, Playwright or Cypress).
  • Proven track record leading UI architecture decisions across multiple teams and aligning stakeholders

without direct authority.

  • Experience mentoring Senior/Staff-level engineers and raising a team’s front-end engineering standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building internal data tooling or dashboards (data quality, pipeline observability, admin

consoles) for large-scale data platforms.

  • Hands-on experience with Walmart’s Living Design system, or comparable large-scale enterprise design

systems.

  • Experience with data-visualization libraries (D3.js, Chart.js, Recharts, or similar).
  • Experience with micro-frontend architectures at enterprise scale.
  • Experience integrating with GraphQL or REST APIs at scale, including handling complex, high-volume

data in the UI layer.

  • Experience shipping UI across multiple international markets, including localization and multi-language

support (e.g., US, Canada, Mexico).
