Job Description
Freelance contract · Remote · $0.15–$0.30 per word
About the role
Penned is a content team for SEO agencies. We match their clients with niche writers and native speakers, and every piece gets a senior edit before it goes back. We’re launching soon, and we’re building our writer bench now.
We’re looking for SEO copywriters who already know an industry inside out. “I’ve written for SaaS clients before” is not a niche. We mean you know the regulation, the jargon, and what the reader is actually searching for. We hire experienced SEO writers in every industry, so whatever your specialism, we’d like to hear from you.
You’ll write content for agency clients from detailed briefs, at our Specialist tier. That tier is 100% human-written, so the job is writing that reads well and ranks. If you enjoy the research as much as the writing, and you check where your articles land after they go live, read on.
What you’ll do
- Write long-form SEO articles in your niche for agency clients. The work is delivered white-label, under the agency’s or their client’s name.
- Work from detailed briefs. Each one sets out the target keyword, search intent, outline, word count and tone. Follow it closely, and flag anything that doesn’t add up before you start writing, not after.
- Research properly. Go to primary sources, check the regulation and the data, and read what’s already ranking so your piece covers the topic better.
- Write for the reader first. Clear structure, headings that match search intent, keywords used naturally, plus a meta title and description.
- Hit your deadlines. Clients get Specialist pieces within 72 hours, so deadlines are fixed and on the short side. If something’s going to slip, tell us early.
- Take editor feedback well. A senior editor reviews every piece for accuracy and SEO. Clients get free revisions for 14 days, so you may occasionally be asked for changes after delivery.
- Write it yourself. No AI drafting at this tier. Some clients run AI-detection checks, and your work needs to pass them because it’s genuinely yours.
Who we’re looking for
- At least two years writing SEO content professionally , with published articles you can show us.
- Real depth in at least one niche. You’ve worked in it, studied it, or written about it long enough that people in the industry would trust your take.
- A solid grasp of on-page SEO: search intent, topical coverage, heading structure, internal linking and E-E-A-T. You know why a page ranks, not just how to fit a keyword in.
- You follow a brief. Closely, and you ask when it’s unclear rather than guessing.
- You enjoy deep research. You go past the first page of results, check your facts, and cite sources a specialist would respect.
- Native or near-native fluency in the language you’ll write in.
- Reliable with deadlines , and honest when something’s going to be late.
Industries, pay and languages
We hire experienced SEO writers for all industries. Our agencies’ clients work across 40+ of them, and pay depends on the type of work:
- Specialist writing: $0.15 per word. Fintech, Health, HR Tech, EdTech, iGaming, Dentistry and more.
- Deep technical and authority: $0.30 per word. B2B SaaS, Cybersecurity, AI and machine learning, Climate Tech.
Don’t see your industry? Apply anyway. These are examples, not the full list.
Health, legal, finance and insurance are “Your Money or Your Life” topics, where Google holds content to a higher standard. For these we’d especially like to hear from writers with relevant qualifications or industry experience.
Languages: we write in 30+ languages, always with native writers. We’re especially keen on writers in Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, the Nordic languages, Polish, Japanese and Korean. If you write in another language, still apply.
