Job Description

Summary Apple engineers rely on large scale device testing environments to develop, validate, and deliver the products and experiences our customers love. Supporting thousands of devices and growing, these environments enable testing across iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and future products.

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a team responsible for the internal platform, automation, and engineering tools that enable Apple teams to efficiently use and support these environments at scale. This role combines people leadership, technical direction, service reliability, and a strong focus on improving the experience of our internal engineering customers.

Description As an Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of engineers who develop and operate the platforms, automation, and tools used to provision, manage, monitor, and support one of Apple’s large scale device testing environments.

Responsibilities

  • You will be accountable for the team’s people, technical execution, and the reliability of the services it provides. You will establish priorities across new capabilities, customer requests, automation, operational improvements, and technical debt while ensuring existing services remain reliable and scalable.
  • You will drive an automation first approach that reduces manual work and improves self service capabilities for both internal engineering customers and the teams supporting the underlying environments. This includes improving device lifecycle management, resource allocation, monitoring and alerting, troubleshooting, service health, capacity planning, and operational workflows.
  • You will develop engineers through coaching, clear expectations, technical leadership, and career development while building a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • You will also partner closely with software engineering, device operations, networking, security, facilities, and other cross functional international teams. You will represent the needs of your team and its customers, translate operational and customer requirements into engineering priorities, and communicate service health, technical risks, roadmap decisions, and progress to partners and leadership.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience managing software, systems, platform, or similarly technical engineering teams, with a demonstrated ability to develop engineers and grow their scope and careers.
  • Strong technical background in automation, engineering platforms, systems, or services operating at scale.
  • Experience leading teams responsible for business critical tools or services, including monitoring, incident response, troubleshooting, and operational improvements.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive automation and replace repetitive or manual processes with scalable engineering solutions.
  • Experience managing competing priorities across customer needs, feature development, service reliability, technical debt, and longer term initiatives.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work across engineering disciplines, organizations, locations, and time zones.
  • BS/MS in Computer Science, Engineering, a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing or managing internal engineering platforms, automation frameworks, device management systems, developer tools, or self service capabilities.
  • Experience supporting large scale device fleets, automated testing environments, or globally distributed engineering services.
  • Familiarity with Apple hardware and operating systems, including macOS and iOS.
  • Experience with Python, Ansible, Git, APIs, or comparable automation and software development technologies.
  • Experience with observability, monitoring and alerting, capacity planning, incident management, and long term service reliability.
  • Understanding of networking and service dependencies across hardware, software, devices, and distributed systems.
  • Demonstrated success building strong relationships with internal customers, understanding their needs, and translating those needs into platform improvements and engineering priorities.
