Job Description

This role is fully remote, open to candidates based anywhere in the United States outside New York. Based in New York? Apply to the New York posting of this role instead.

Join Filed as an AI Tax Engineer: bring your expertise to the platform tax professionals rely on, work alongside a team of CPAs, and help shape where the profession goes next. Full-time, remote, US-based. Filed is building the first AI tax preparer trusted by America’s accounting firms. The accountant is irreplaceable. The work surrounding them isn’t. Filed takes on that surrounding work, from the moment client documents arrive to the plan a firm hands back, so tax professionals can spend their time on judgment, advice and the client relationship.

Filed works inside the software firms already use (CCH Axcess, UltraTax, Lacerte, Drake and ProConnect) across individual, business, trust and exempt organization returns. We’re backed by Northzone, Neo, Raine and Day One Ventures.

What We Should Tell You About The Role Filed is built for tax professionals, by a team that includes them. Our CPAs sit at the center of the company. They decide what quality means in everything Filed does, and they shape what we build next.

As an AI Tax Engineer, you’d join that team. This is a strategic role. You’ll bring years of practice experience to the product, work with our product and engineering leads on where Filed goes next, and work directly with the firms that run on it. Your judgment ends up in a platform used by firms across the country, instead of staying inside one practice.

We think the profession deserves better than the busywork that has grown up around it, and that the people doing this work should spend their time on the parts that need their expertise. This role is how we make sure Filed delivers on both.

We hire for this role on a rolling basis rather than to a fixed headcount. If you’re the right person, we’d rather meet you now than wait for a req to open.

Here’s why this is a terrible job

  • You won’t sign returns anymore. If client work is the part you love most, this may not be the right fit.
  • There’s no off-season. Firms rely on Filed year-round, so we need someone fully committed to this role.
  • There’s no established playbook. The role is new, and you’ll help define it.
  • We’re building something new, so not everything we try will work the first time.

Here’s why it’s the best career choice you’ll make

  • Your expertise shapes a platform used by firms across the country.
  • You’ll see how dozens of firms run their practices, and help raise the standard for all of them.
  • No billable hours or utilization targets.
  • Tax expertise drives product decisions here. You’ll be at the table when they’re made.
  • You’ll help move the profession toward more advisory work and less busywork, from inside the company building what comes next.

The teammate we’re looking for

  • Has years of practice behind them and strong views on how the work should be done.
  • Cares about the profession and wants to see it valued for judgment, not hours.
  • Can explain a technical tax position clearly to people outside tax.
  • Is curious about how technology can change the work.
  • Is comfortable pushing back on anyone, including us.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

  • Being a tax expert at the center of how Filed works, alongside our team of CPAs, and setting the standard for quality across everything we ship.
  • Partnering with product and engineering to decide what we build next, from document intake through to tax planning.
  • Working closely with customer firms, understanding how they run their practices, and turning that into product direction.

Your Hard Skillset

  • Licensed CPA with at least 5 years of experience.
  • Based in the US.
  • Deep experience in at least one of CCH Axcess, UltraTax, Lacerte, Drake or ProConnect.
  • Comfortable across individual and business returns, including partnerships and K-1s.

Your Soft Skillset

  • Clear writing. Much of your influence will happen in documents and comments.
  • Strategic thinking. You see past the return in front of you to the practice behind it.
  • Ownership. When you spot a problem, you follow it through to the fix.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and a small team that moves fast.
  • Credibility with partners and preparers alike.

Growth and levels

  • This role grows with the product. As Filed takes on more of the work sur…
