Job Description

Civil / Structural Design Engineer

Salary: £40,000 – £100,000 DOE + Bonus

Location: UK Wide – Hybrid / Remote Working

**Job Type: Permanent Full-Time**

The Opportunity

J3A Recruitment is working with an established and growing specialist civil engineering contractor delivering technically challenging infrastructure projects across the UK.

Due to continued growth and an increasing pipeline of work, we’re looking to speak with Civil and Structural Design Engineers at various stages of their careers.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a business operating within specialist areas of civil engineering, including tunnelling, shafts, microtunnelling, directional drilling and complex underground infrastructure.

We’re not looking for one particular level of experience. The business has flexibility to appoint at Intermediate, Experienced or Associate level, depending on your technical background and capabilities.

Salary & Experience Levels

  • Intermediate Engineer – £40,000 to £60,000: Suitable for engineers developing their technical expertise, with experience in civil or structural design and an interest in specialist underground infrastructure.
  • Experienced / Senior Engineer – £50,000 to £80,000: For established engineers capable of managing design packages, solving complex engineering challenges and working with greater technical independence.
  • Associate Engineer – £80,000 to £100,000: For senior technical professionals who are chartered or working towards chartership, with the ability to provide technical leadership, oversee design delivery and support wider engineering teams.

The Role

Depending on your experience and seniority, responsibilities may include:

  • Producing and reviewing civil and structural engineering designs for complex infrastructure projects.
  • Supporting the design and delivery of tunnelling, shaft construction, trenchless technology and heavy civil engineering schemes.
  • Undertaking engineering calculations, technical assessments and design reviews.
  • Developing practical, buildable engineering solutions that consider safety, programme and construction methodology.
  • Working collaboratively with project managers, construction teams, clients and external design consultants.
  • Providing technical guidance throughout the project lifecycle, from early design development through to construction.
  • Supporting temporary and permanent works design coordination where appropriate.
  • At senior levels, taking ownership of technical delivery, mentoring engineers and contributing to engineering strategy.

What We’re Looking For

We’re particularly interested in speaking with engineers who have experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Tunnelling and underground infrastructure
  • Shaft design and construction
  • Microtunnelling and pipe jacking
  • Horizontal directional drilling (HDD)
  • Trenchless engineering
  • Heavy civil engineering and structural design
  • Ground engineering and complex infrastructure works

Experience within specialist tunnelling or trenchless engineering would be highly advantageous. However, we’re equally interested in engineers from broader heavy civil engineering backgrounds who possess strong technical design capabilities.

A relevant degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related discipline would be beneficial.

Chartered status (CEng) or progress towards chartership is particularly desirable for Associate-level applicants.

What’s On Offer?

  • £40,000 – £100,000 basic salary , dependent on experience and seniority.
  • Performance-related bonus opportunity.
  • 25 days annual leave.
  • Highly flexible hybrid / remote working arrangements.
  • Limited requirement to attend site or office.
  • Exposure to technically challenging, specialist civil engineering projects.
  • Opportunity to progress into senior technical and leadership positions.
  • The chance to work with an established contractor delivering major infrastructure projects throughout the UK.

Interested?

Whether you’re an Intermediate Engineer looking to develop your career, an experienced designer seeking greater flexibility, or an Associate-level professional ready for a new challenge, we’d be keen to hear from you.

You don’t necessarily need to come directly from tunnelling. If your background is in heavy civils, structural engineering or complex infrastructure design, your experience could be highly relevant.
