Job Description

About us

Rivan Industries (Rivan.com) is a synthetic fuel company designed to decarbonise heavy industry. We aim to make synthetic fuel cheaper than fossil fuels and sustain life on earth by keeping the CO2 locked underground.

We design and manufacture modular synthetic fuel plants consisting of a DAC system, an Alkaline Electrolyser, and a Sabatier Reactor, vertically integrating with off-grid DC solar and the European gas-grid. Here’s our manifesto on how we plan to do it. We’ve recently deployed the UK’s largest synthetic fuel plant and are planning to 1000x this scale in the next 2 years.

We’re looking for a Senior HSE Manager as we prepare to move into a 50,000 sq ft manufacturing and R&D facility in London and simultaneously deploy our hardware at project sites. This is someone who understands that safety and operational progress are not mutually exclusive. You’ll ensure our rate of innovation continues, whilst implementing gold standard safety measures to protect our team.

Key Responsibilities

Safety Management System

  • Build and maintain a proportionate, risk-based safety management system suited to the combined R&D and manufacturing environment, owning all factory safety documentation - risk assessments, safe systems of work, safety SOPs, and regulatory assessments (COSHH, DSEAR, PUWER, LOLER, LEV).
  • Identify, track and ensure compliance with all applicable legislation, and own the safety budget - prioritising spend effectively and presenting requirements in business terms.
  • Develop and deliver a safety improvement roadmap with clear milestones and measurable outcomes.

Operational Safety

  • Conduct regular site inspections and walk-arounds, driving hazards and corrective actions to closure, and lead incident investigations using structured root cause analysis with tracked mitigating actions.
  • Be an appointed ‘competent’ person for the premises, as per Regulation 7.
  • Own the permit-to-work and fire safety systems, ensuring they remain fit for purpose as operations evolve.
  • Coordinate all statutory inspections and examinations to 100% compliance, alongside occupational health and surveillance programmes covering noise, vibration and respiratory risk.

Compliance & Reporting

  • Prepare and submit all regulatory notifications and reports (including RIDDOR), and lead regulatory inspections through to prompt, thorough resolution of findings.
  • Manage contractor safety end to end - pre-qualification, induction, RAMS review and ongoing performance monitoring - and liaise with insurers and external auditors on safety matters.
  • Report monthly to senior leadership using both leading and lagging indicators, and embed continuous improvement through structured audit and review cycles.

Core Skills:

  • 5+ years professional experience in relevant environment (workshop, factory, or laboratory)
  • Practical experience of pragmatic safety implementation

Preferable Skills:

  • NEBOSH National Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management
  • NEBOSH HSE Certificate in Process Safety Management
  • Experience working with DSEAR, COSHH, & PSSR environments

Specifics:

  • £50-80k salary depending on experience
  • Share options as part of the early team
  • In-person work at our HQ in Bermondsey, South London
  • Extensive relocation support, including £6000 per year extra to live close to our HQ
  • Private health insurance
  • Unlimited time-off

We encourage exceptional applicants from all backgrounds to apply for this role, even if they do not meet all the requirements listed.
