About the Role

ClickHouse is seeking an experienced software engineer to join its AI/ML Engineering team. This team develops and operates AI and machine learning products across the ClickHouse platform, including the Agentic Data Stack, AI Functions, chDB, the in-console copilot, and integrations with AI/ML partners.

In this role, you will build AI-powered features across backend services and frontend interfaces, develop APIs that connect ClickHouse database capabilities with AI/ML systems, and integrate models into production environments. You will also contribute to the full machine learning lifecycle, from data preparation and training to evaluation and deployment.

The position requires strong production software engineering experience, practical knowledge of AI/ML technologies, and the ability to take ownership of features from initial design through production. You will collaborate with engineering teams to make AI capabilities easier to integrate throughout the ClickHouse platform and participate in the team’s daytime on-call rotation.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement AI-powered features across backend inference services and frontend interfaces within ClickHouse Cloud.
• Build robust, scalable APIs connecting ClickHouse database capabilities with internal and external AI/ML inference systems.
• Develop and maintain integrations with AI/ML frameworks, tools, and industry standards.
• Integrate machine learning models into production systems with appropriate monitoring, versioning, observability, and evaluation.
• Manage the machine learning pipeline end to end, including data preparation, model training, and evaluation.
• Fine-tune existing models or train custom models when off-the-shelf solutions do not meet product requirements.
• Monitor developments in AI/ML and apply techniques that deliver meaningful improvements to ClickHouse products.
• Participate in the team’s daytime on-call rotation to support production systems and services.
• Drive features from concept to production with a high degree of ownership and minimal supervision.
• Collaborate with colleagues and communicate technical concepts effectively to stakeholders with different backgrounds.

Required Qualifications

• At least 5 years of software engineering experience in production environments.
• Practical exposure to AI and machine learning technologies.
• Experience integrating and deploying AI/ML models in production systems, including working with inference APIs and vector databases.
• Strong ownership skills and the ability to independently drive features through design, development, and deployment.
• Ability to work collaboratively and communicate technical concepts clearly to diverse stakeholders.
• Applied machine learning experience using Python, including Jupyter, PyTorch, and common ML libraries.
• Hands-on experience with compute clusters such as Ray or Slurm.
• Ability to design reliable experiments and use empirical results to guide technical and architectural decisions.

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP, particularly services supporting AI/ML deployment.
• Understanding of database systems and data processing pipelines.
• Experience with ClickHouse.
• Experience with embedding-based systems, including retrieval, ranking, and recommendation systems.
• Understanding of the representation-learning concepts underlying embedding-based applications.

Compensation and Benefits

• Compensation range of $150,000 to $238,000.
