ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a mid-level or senior UI/UX designer who cares about social, economic, and political justice and wants their work to matter. Years of experience are a plus. What matters most is good design instinct that resonates with our audience and a drive to build tools that support grassroots organizing across America.
This is a part-time, paid cofounder-level role, with a director title, and a path to long-term, well-paid employment if the project gains traction. You can work from anywhere in the US, Canada, the UK, Mexico, or Germany. The team is small, mission-driven, and moving quickly.
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
We are a nonprofit startup with a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor, building a next-generation digital platform for civic organizing, mobilizing, and mutual aid. The first three apps are:
- AdoptAnOrganizer (AAO): a progressive web app that helps aspiring organizers meet basic needs, including housing, transportation, and food, so they can leave unfulfilling jobs and organize full time.
- MAMA (Mutual Aid for Mass Actions): a progressive web app to organize mutual aid for mass actions, including support for people in sustained nonviolent civic action. Program design is subject to legal review.
- WinWisely Ladder of Engagement: a simple, tested engagement tool that helps nonviolent campaigns recruit participants. Demo: tinyurl.com/GetCourageNowLOE
THE ROLE
You will carry all the usual responsibilities of a top UI/UX designer for a progressive web app, adapted to an audience and mission that differ from a typical commercial product. Many of our users are angry, tired, or under pressure. The experience should feel like sanctuary: a place to learn organizing skills, meet mentors and fellow organizers, find community, and build a bridge toward action, rather than a cold financial transaction.
REQUIREMENTS
- At least two years of full-time UI/UX experience.
- Excellent communication. You respond promptly on Signal and can make short fixes within 48 hours of notice.
- Evidence in your past work of commitment to social, economic, health care, and/or climate justice.
- Mastery of Figma and Vercel, plus other standard technical skills.
- Experience designing for mission-driven products rather than purely profit-driven ones.
- Familiarity with Progressive Web App (PWA) design patterns, and basic familiarity with React or front-end component libraries.
You do not need to meet every item on this list to apply. Research on job applications suggests many people, and women in particular, hold back unless they meet every requirement. If the work excites you, apply.
Preferred
- Familiarity with PayloadCMS and/or HTML and CSS coding.
- Connections to UX testing resources, or to a content manager familiar with PayloadCMS.
COMPENSATION
- Paid contract. Pay is negotiable and tied to results. The current budget covers about 10 to 20 remaining MVP issues, which may increase after UI/UX testing begins (expected by October 20).
- Some issues may need a programmer, or a designer who can use AI-assisted tools for simple programming.
- Milestone bonuses tied to platform growth, to be defined in writing before work begins.
- First right of refusal for long-term, well-paid part-time or full-time employment if the platform gains traction.
