Job Description

About The Company UDX is a service-disabled veteran-owned small business (SDVOSB) established in 2011 and headquartered in Durham, North Carolina. With a distributed engineering team, UDX specializes in building and managing cloud infrastructure and web platforms for organizations where uptime is critical. Our client portfolio includes cultural institutions, live event promoters, consumer brands, real estate firms, and professional certification bodies. We develop and operate our proprietary delivery platform, Rabbit, which transforms Git repositories into fully provisioned, monitored, and secured environments on Kubernetes across multiple cloud providers including Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Microsoft Azure. Additionally, UDX develops Kubernetes operators for the Azure Marketplace, supporting seamless deployment and management of complex web infrastructure. Our approach emphasizes transparency, accountability, and precision, with every hour of work mapped to a GitHub issue, ensuring clear tracking, billing, and historical records of project progress.

About The Role We are seeking an experienced Web Developer specializing in WordPress and Next.js to join our team on a contract basis. The ideal candidate will be responsible for transforming design files into fully functional, high-performance websites using WordPress, custom themes, plugins, and headless Next.js front ends. You will work within our Kubernetes-based deployment platform, Rabbit, to deploy, maintain, and optimize websites that are vital to our clients’ operations. Your focus will be on delivering pixel-perfect themes, integrating essential services such as CRM and marketing platforms, and ensuring site stability and performance post-launch. This role offers the opportunity to work remotely with flexible hours, primarily overlapping with US Eastern business hours, and involves direct collaboration with company founders and clients. You will be instrumental in building websites that directly impact revenue streams and brand presence, ensuring each project meets high standards of quality, security, and user experience.

Qualifications

  • Four or more years of professional experience developing WordPress sites, including custom theme and plugin development using modern PHP.
  • Proficiency in JavaScript and TypeScript, with hands-on experience in Next.js or React, including server-side rendering techniques.
  • Strong skills in Tailwind CSS and responsive design, capable of translating design files into pixel-perfect layouts.
  • Experience working within Git workflows, including pull requests, CI/CD pipelines, and containerized development environments.
  • Knowledge of WooCommerce, event or ticketing platform integrations, and CRM or marketing automation tools.
  • Excellent written English communication skills suitable for client issue threads and documentation.
  • Availability to overlap with US Eastern hours for collaboration and support.
  • Comfort working within a cloud-based Kubernetes platform, even if not managing Kubernetes directly.

Responsibilities

  • Transform design files into fully functional WordPress websites, including custom themes, block patterns, post types, and plugin configurations.
  • Develop headless and hybrid front ends using Next.js and React, ensuring optimal server-side rendering and CDN caching strategies.
  • Deploy websites on the Rabbit platform, managing repository setup, environment branches, CloudFront configurations, SSL certificates, and launch checklists.
  • Maintain and support live websites through regular updates, performance optimization, and addressing editorial or client requests.
  • Integrate third-party services such as HubSpot, ticketing platforms, Google Tag Manager, Meta and Google conversion APIs, and email delivery systems.
  • Write and maintain automated testing suites, including Ghost Inspector and end-to-end tests, to prevent regressions and ensure reliable releases.
  • Track all tasks via GitHub issues, providing detailed comments, PR links, and documentation for transparency and accountability.

Benefits

  • Contract-based engagement with hourly billing and a steady backlog of diverse projects.
  • Fully managed infrastructure, allowing you to focus on development rather than server management.
  • Work on websites that are central to clients’ revenue, providing visibility and impactful work.
  • Direct access to company founders, enabling quick decision-makin…
