Job Description

About the Company

A Y Combinator-backed biotechnology startup, supported by Sequoia Capital, is developing generative AI technology for scientific communication. Its platform helps researchers create accurate scientific visuals using scalable vector graphics generated by AI.

About the Role

The company is seeking experienced machine learning and applied AI engineers to develop generative AI models that produce scientific vector graphics. This role focuses on designing advanced model architectures, building multimodal AI pipelines, and taking generative AI systems from early prototypes to scalable, production-ready deployments.

You will collaborate with experienced engineering and product teams, contribute to technical strategy, and make decisions about model architecture, open-source tools, and custom solutions. The position suits an engineer with strong generative AI expertise who can take ownership of complex projects and work independently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement advanced machine learning architectures for vector graphics generation.
  • Own the end-to-end development of generative AI systems, from prototyping through scalable deployment.
  • Apply foundational model techniques to develop AI-powered scientific communication tools.
  • Collaborate with engineering and product teams to develop and improve generative AI capabilities.
  • Build and deploy multimodal AI pipelines that meet production reliability and performance requirements.
  • Drive technical decisions and contribute to long-term machine learning platform planning.
  • Evaluate and integrate open-source tools where appropriate.
  • Participate in hackathons and in-person team events as part of a remote-first working culture.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience building and scaling generative models, including foundational models or text-to-image systems.
  • Strong programming skills in Python.
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Expertise in text-to-image generation, foundational models, or generative AI.
  • Experience deploying multimodal AI systems in production environments.
  • Ability to evaluate trade-offs between developing custom solutions and adopting existing tools.
  • Strong ownership, technical decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to lead model architecture and development with minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master’s degree or PhD from a highly regarded academic institution.
  • Experience working in both startup environments and large technology companies.

Location and Work Arrangement

  • Remote position open to candidates in the United States or Canada.
  • Full-time employment.
  • Participation in occasional in-person team events may be required.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Annual salary range: $150,000–$300,000.
  • Benefits include paid time off, a 401(k) plan, pet benefits, and other employee benefits.
  • The company also highlights opportunities for professional growth and a collaborative work culture.
