Job Description
Job Overview
Gravann is seeking a Lead Scala Developer to lead the development, operation and maintenance of a high-volume, public-facing federal regulatory data platform. The platform collects, validates and publishes financial-industry data, and its source code is open source. You will architect reactive, cloud-native systems and lead a cross-functional team of remote developers. The work is hands-on, so you will also write and review production code.
This is a contingent position that depends on contract award. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and able to pass a federal background investigation.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect and build scalable, fault-tolerant, API-driven, distributed services in Scala, following the principles of the Reactive Manifesto.
- Act as lead developer for a cross-functional team of remote developers. This includes setting technical direction, reviewing code and mentoring engineers.
- Develop and maintain CQRS and event-driven systems backed by PostgreSQL. Build caching layers (such as Redis) and asynchronous I/O pipelines to deliver and optimize large data sets.
- Keep the platform available and error-free during peak filing seasons, and make sure data is published on time.
- Build, deploy and troubleshoot containerized microservices on Kubernetes in a highly elastic environment.
- Maintain AWS environments and deploy and update services using AWS CDK.
- Deliver high-quality code through automated testing and continuous delivery. Use GitHub for source control, planning and open-source collaboration.
- Support platform operations through metrics, monitoring and orchestration. Help develop and maintain authentication and authorization services that follow federal best practices.
- Work with product, DevOps, QA and business analysis teams to deliver features and shared platform components.
Required Qualifications
- At least 10 years of professional experience architecting scalable, API-driven, fault-tolerant, distributed, cloud-native solutions.
- Professional experience with functional programming in Scala.
- Experience leading a cross-functional team of remote developers and serving as lead developer.
- Demonstrated experience on open-source projects, including delivering public-facing solutions.
- U.S. citizenship, and the ability to obtain a federal background investigation and a favorable fitness determination.
Mandatory Technical Skills
- Scala: functional programming, the Akka/Pekko toolkit, the reactive programming model and actor-based concurrency.
- Architecture: CQRS and event-driven architecture, with PostgreSQL.
- Performance: caching layers (Redis or similar) and asynchronous I/O for large data delivery.
- Containers: Docker and Kubernetes, including developing, deploying and troubleshooting microservices in an elastic environment.
- AWS: maintaining AWS environments and deploying services with AWS CDK.
- Source control: GitHub for source code management and planning.
- Design: system design for distributed, cloud-native solutions.
Preferred Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field (strongly preferred).
- Data pipelines built with the Kedro framework in Python.
- Identity management and verification experience with OIDC.
- Infrastructure as code with Python-based AWS CDK.
- ETL pipelines using AWS event-driven services such as S3, EventBridge and Lambda.
- Experience in financial or regulatory data systems, or other federal government work.
Note: This position is contingent upon contract award.
