Job Description

The University of Law is looking for an AI Developer in Education to join our Technology Enhanced Learning and Teaching team and play a hands-on role in shaping how AI is used across the University.

We’re looking for someone who can look at a problem, understand what we are trying to achieve, and then work out whether AI is the right solution and, if it is, build it, test it, improve it and make it work at scale.

You’ll sit at the intersection of AI development, software engineering and education , working closely with our academic and learning design teams to turn ideas into practical AI-powered tools and experiences. You’ll also work directly with our key AI technology partners, helping to shape development priorities, troubleshoot issues and make sure we are getting real value from the technology we invest in.

This is an opportunity to join a University that is actively exploring what AI can do for education, while having the technical expertise and influence to help determine what should actually be built and how it should work. What will you be doing? Education You’ll take technical ownership of the development, configuration and optimisation of AI tools used across our educational provision. This will include:

  • Designing, developing and maintaining Topics, Agents and Workflows within our generative AI platform, turning educational and business requirements into functional solutions.
  • Building, testing and refining AI-powered learning experiences, using user feedback and evidence to continually improve them.
  • Exploring emerging AI technologies and leading technical pilots and proof-of-concept projects — assessing not just whether something can be done, but whether it delivers meaningful value.
  • Integrating AI platforms with University systems, including Blackboard Ultra, student information systems and other digital learning technologies.
  • Working with APIs, LLMs and data integrations to create solutions that are secure, reliable and fit for purpose.
  • Acting as a technical expert for our key AI platforms and technology partners, understanding their capabilities, limitations and development roadmaps.
  • Troubleshooting technical issues and identifying practical ways to improve the performance, usability and reliability of our AI tools.
  • Helping successful ideas move beyond experimentation and into sustainable solutions that can be used across the University.
  • Producing clear technical documentation and guidance that can be understood by both technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Working closely with academic, learning design and professional services teams to understand their needs and translate them into effective technical solutions.
  • Ensuring our AI development meets the University’s requirements around security, accessibility, data protection and academic integrity.

What are we looking for? We’re looking for someone with a strong technical foundation who is genuinely curious about what AI can do and equally interested in whether it should be used and what difference it will make.

You’ll Have

  • Demonstrable experience developing, configuring and maintaining AI tools or software applications.
  • Strong programming skills in one or more relevant languages, such as Python or JavaScript, alongside experience working with AI/ML technologies.
  • Hands-on experience with LLM APIs, prompt engineering and AI platforms, including chatbot or agent-based frameworks.
  • Experience working with APIs, system architecture and data integration.
  • Strong technical problem-solving skills and the ability to investigate, test and resolve complex issues.
  • Experience communicating technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences and working effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Experience producing clear, practical technical documentation.
  • A strong understanding of data security, GDPR and technical compliance.
  • A willingness to experiment with emerging technology, while applying sound judgement about what is genuinely useful and scalable.

Experience working within higher education would be valuable, as would experience in a legal education environment, but we are particularly interested in people who can demonstrate strong technical development experience and a track record of turning new technology into practical solutions.
