Job Description
Sunday Atlas
Plan less. See more.
Sunday Atlas operates a travel-planning membership for individuals, families, and small groups. Members use our website to build shared itineraries, organize reservations, save local recommendations, and keep important trip information in one place. Our distributed team combines editorial travel research with practical digital planning tools.
Frontend Web Developer
Sunday Atlas is hiring a Frontend Web Developer to build and improve the customer-facing parts of our travel-planning platform.
You will work primarily with React, Next.js, TypeScript, HTML, and CSS. This is a frontend-focused position: backend services and infrastructure are maintained by separate engineers, although you will regularly integrate with their APIs.
Position overview
Location: Remote within the continental United States
Work arrangement: Fully remote
Employment: Full-time, salaried and exempt
Schedule: Monday–Friday with shared collaboration hours from 12:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. Eastern Time
Typical hours: Approximately 40 hours per week
Salary: $96,000–$114,000 per year, depending on relevant experience and demonstrated qualifications
Annual bonus: Target of 7% of base salary, based on company and individual performance
Reports to: Frontend Engineering Lead
Direct reports: None
Travel: One optional company meeting per year with approved expenses paid by the company
On-call: No routine overnight or weekend rotation
What you’ll do
- Build responsive interfaces using React, Next.js, TypeScript, HTML, and CSS.
- Turn approved designs and product requirements into reusable production components.
- Integrate frontend features with documented APIs maintained by backend engineers.
- Maintain and extend the company’s shared design system.
- Improve keyboard navigation, screen-reader support, color contrast, form behavior, and other accessibility features.
- Write unit, component, and browser-based tests for important customer workflows.
- Investigate frontend defects using browser tools, logs, monitoring data, and customer reports.
- Review code and provide practical feedback to other developers.
- Work with Product and Design to identify unclear requirements and edge cases before development begins.
- Improve page performance, loading behavior, error handling, and mobile usability.
- Document important component behavior and technical decisions.
The role does not require routine backend development, database administration, infrastructure ownership, or production deployment outside the established release process.
What we’re looking for
- At least two years of professional frontend or web-development experience.
- Strong working knowledge of JavaScript or TypeScript, HTML, and modern CSS.
- Experience building production interfaces with React or another component-based JavaScript framework.
- Understanding of responsive layouts, browser behavior, semantic HTML, and web accessibility.
- Experience working with REST or GraphQL APIs.
- Ability to use Git and participate in a pull-request review process.
- Ability to explain technical decisions clearly to designers, product employees, and other engineers.
- Experience diagnosing problems rather than relying only on trial-and-error changes.
A computer science degree is not required. Professional experience, internships, bootcamp projects, open-source work, or a strong portfolio may demonstrate the required skills.
Experience with Next.js, React Testing Library, Playwright, Storybook, design systems, analytics, or travel products is helpful but not required.
Technical environment
The current frontend stack includes:
- React and Next.js.
- TypeScript.
- CSS Modules and design tokens.
- Storybook.
- React Testing Library and Playwright.
- REST and GraphQL APIs.
- GitHub and GitHub Actions.
- Sentry and product analytics tools.
- Figma for design collaboration.
Candidates are not expected to have used every listed tool. The interview focuses on transferable frontend knowledge rather than memorization of a specific framework version.
Workload and releases
Most employees work approximately 40 hours per week. Teams plan work in two-week development cycles and reserve capacity for testing, accessibility, maintenance, and unexpected defects.
Production releases normally occur during regular business hours. A developer may occasionally assist with an urgent frontend problem outside those ho…
