We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team on a permanent, part-time basis.

About the role

This is a hands-on mechanical design position combining engineering development, 3D CAD modelling and the preparation of manufacturing documentation.

Working from initial design briefs and concepts provided by the company director, you will be responsible for developing practical engineering solutions and producing the detailed designs required for manufacture.

The role will involve a substantial amount of 3D modelling and drawing production, alongside mechanical calculations, component specification and technical problem-solving.

You will work closely with our workshop team to ensure designs are practical, cost-effective and suitable for manufacture.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop mechanical designs from initial concepts, sketches and technical briefs.
  • Produce detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies and manufacturing drawings.
  • Carry out mechanical design calculations, including loads, stresses, deflection and component sizing.
  • Design welded steel structures, mechanical assemblies, hinges, pivots and associated components.
  • Produce DXF files, flat patterns, bills of materials and manufacturing documentation.
  • Select appropriate materials, steel sections, fasteners and mechanical components.
  • Design with consideration for welding, laser cutting, press braking, machining and assembly.
  • Identify opportunities to improve existing designs and manufacturing efficiency.
  • Liaise directly with workshop staff to resolve technical and production queries.
  • Maintain accurate engineering drawings, documentation and revision records.

Essential skills and experience

  • Previous experience in mechanical design within a manufacturing or engineering environment.
  • Proficiency in 3D parametric CAD software.
  • Ability to produce accurate, detailed manufacturing drawings.
  • Competence in practical mechanical engineering calculations and component design.
  • Good understanding of steel fabrication, welded structures and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to work independently from an initial design brief and develop workable engineering solutions.
  • Strong attention to detail and a practical approach to problem-solving.

Desirable experience

  • Autodesk Fusion (formerly Fusion 360).
  • Design of commercial vehicle bodies, trailers or specialist vehicle equipment.
  • Hydraulic systems, mechanical linkages and moving assemblies.
  • Bespoke machinery and structural steel fabrication.
  • HNC, HND, degree or equivalent qualification in mechanical engineering.

Working arrangements

This is a permanent, part-time position based at our premises in Darley Dale, Derbyshire, working three days per week.

The successful candidate will work directly with the company director and our manufacturing team, contributing to a varied range of engineering and fabrication projects.
