Job Description

Assistant Underwriter – Bristol

About SSR

Sutton Specialist Risks (SSR) is a long‑established wholesale broker and MGA, specialising in liabilities‑led commercial insurance placed on a delegated authority basis. For over 35 years, we’ve supported insurance brokers across the UK with sector‑leading products and deep technical expertise.

Our underwriting team creates tailored solutions for a wide range of specialist industries including security, electrical contracting, renewable energy, facilities services, pest control, aviation products, and more. You can learn about our products at www.ssr.co.uk.

Our Bristol waterfront office offers a collaborative workplace close to Cabot Circus and Temple Meads, with hybrid working available.

The Opportunity

We are looking for an efficient, proactive and commercially minded Assistant Underwriter to join our growing team. This is an ideal role for someone early in their insurance career who is ambitious, confident communicating with brokers, and keen to build strong technical underwriting skills through hands‑on experience.

Underwriting experience isn’t required – but a background in financial services or another regulated environment, plus a strong academic foundation, will help you succeed.

What you’ll be doing

You will support our Underwriters in delivering profitable growth, providing excellent broker service, and maintaining high retention rates. Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with the assessment and underwriting of risks within a delegated authority framework
  • Helping drive new business and renewal performance
  • Managing and allocating submissions from shared inboxes
  • Preparing documentation, updating records, and supporting quote and bind processes
  • Building strong, professional relationships with both brokers and insurer partners
  • Maintaining accuracy and attention to detail across all workstreams
  • Learning the foundations of underwriting through structured mentoring and on‑the‑job training

This is a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven role that suits someone who is organised, diligent, and motivated by achieving results.

What we’re looking for

  • A confident communicator who enjoys speaking with brokers and negotiating terms
  • A dynamic, sales‑positive attitude with the drive to hit team targets
  • Strong organisation and time‑management skills
  • High attention to detail and accuracy in a technical environment
  • Comfortable working with numbers, analysing information and learning underwriting concepts
  • Competent using Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word
  • Experience in insurance or financial services is preferred but not essential
  • Prior Acturis experience is an advantage but full training is available
  • Degree‑level education is preferred, though we welcome applications from strong early‑career candidates

What you’ll get in return

  • 25 days annual leave plus Bank Holidays, increasing with service
  • Enhanced family‑friendly policies
  • Additional milestone leave for major life events
  • Pension with 5% employer match
  • Company cash‑plan healthcare benefit
  • Income protection and life assurance
  • Regular company social events
  • Funded professional development and study support
  • Hybrid working up to two days per week
  • Supportive team culture with genuine progression opportunities
  • Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, with a one‑hour lunch break
