About The Role The Staff AI Engineer role at Capital One offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of an enterprise-scale, AI-native analysis platform. This remote-eligible position involves partnering with cross-functional teams including engineers, research scientists, product managers, and program managers to design, develop, and deploy advanced AI systems that revolutionize how data analysis and decision-making occur across the organization. The ideal candidate will be instrumental in shaping the technical vision for foundational AI systems, ensuring scalability, performance, and ethical responsibility are embedded into every solution. You will work on cutting-edge AI components such as foundation model training, large language model inference, multi-agent workflows, similarity search, and governance frameworks, utilizing a broad stack of open-source and SaaS AI technologies. Your expertise will help optimize AI performance, streamline deployment standards, and foster responsible AI principles, ultimately transforming Capital One’s data analysis capabilities and customer interactions.

Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in engineering, mathematics, and AI systems, with extensive experience in developing scalable AI solutions. A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, or related fields along with at least 8 years of relevant experience, or a master’s degree with a minimum of 6 years of experience, is required. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Go, Scala, CUDA, or Java is essential. Experience with deploying AI systems on cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure is highly preferred. Candidates should demonstrate expertise in designing AI architectures, optimizing training and inference processes, and applying state-of-the-art techniques for performance and cost-efficiency. Strong communication skills, leadership abilities, and a passion for staying current with AI research are also important. Experience with multi-cloud strategies, federated AI systems, and responsible AI principles will be advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to deliver AI-powered products that enhance operational efficiency and customer engagement.
• Design, develop, test, and support AI software components, including foundation models, large language models, agents, similarity search, and governance frameworks.
• Leverage open-source and SaaS AI technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, PyTorch, and others to build scalable solutions.
• Innovate and implement state-of-the-art foundation model optimization techniques to improve scalability, latency, throughput, and cost-efficiency of AI systems.
• Contribute to the long-term technical vision and roadmap for foundational AI infrastructure at Capital One.
• Establish and maintain enterprise-wide AI architecture standards, unifying tooling, observability, and deployment practices across teams.
• Own the design and integration of model routing, caching, and orchestration systems supporting hybrid and multi-model workloads.
• Embed responsible AI principles into system design, ensuring transparency, fairness, and reproducibility are prioritized.
• Lead educational initiatives, mentorship, and dissemination of best practices through architecture councils and AI guilds.
