About The Role We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Staff AI Engineer to join our team remotely. In this role, you will be instrumental in shaping the future of AI at Capital One by designing, developing, and deploying large-scale AI systems that impact millions of customers and internal stakeholders. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams comprising engineers, research scientists, product managers, and technical program managers to deliver innovative AI-powered products. Your expertise will help advance the state of the art in foundation models, large language models, and multi-agent workflows, ensuring our AI systems are efficient, reliable, and aligned with our strategic goals. You will also play a key role in establishing AI performance, safety, and governance standards across the organization, fostering a culture of responsible AI development and deployment. This position offers the opportunity to lead multi-year platform initiatives, influence the technical vision of AI infrastructure, and mentor the next generation of AI leaders within Capital One.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields plus at least 10 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies
• Master’s Degree in relevant fields plus at least 8 years of experience in AI/ML development
• Minimum of 10 years programming experience with Python, Go, Scala, CUDA, or Java
• Experience architecting AI platforms with trade-offs around cost, latency, throughput, and accuracy
• Proven expertise in deploying scalable AI solutions on cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure
• Strong leadership skills with demonstrated ability to mentor engineering teams and influence stakeholders at senior levels
• Experience with developing AI algorithms including LLM inference, similarity search, vector databases, guardrails, and memory systems
• Knowledge of optimizing training and inference software to improve hardware utilization and reduce latency and costs
• Familiarity with building agentic AI systems and workflows
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate complex AI concepts to diverse audiences
• Industry recognition through patents, publications, or open-source contributions in applied AI or machine learning infrastructure
• Experience in designing long-term AI infrastructure strategies that balance cost, ethics, and regulatory compliance
• Proficiency in driving organization-wide AI safety, governance, and responsible AI standards

• Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver AI-powered products that enhance customer experiences and operational efficiency
• Design, develop, test, and deploy AI software components, including foundation model training, inference, and multi-agent workflows
• Leverage open-source and SaaS AI technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, and PyTorch
• Invent and implement state-of-the-art foundation model optimization techniques to improve scalability, performance, and cost-efficiency
