Job Description
About Tensor Engineering
Tensor Engineering is a Florida-based multidisciplinary engineering firm specializing in residential and commercial building design. Our work includes high-end custom luxury residences, new construction, structural renovations, additions, and commercial projects throughout Florida.
We are seeking an experienced, highly capable Structural Engineer to support our growing project portfolio on an ongoing contract basis.
This opportunity is ideal for an engineer with a strong background in Florida structural design who is comfortable independently developing structural calculations, drawings, and construction documents while collaborating with our licensed Professional Engineer.
We are not looking for an entry-level engineer - we need someone with hands-on building structural design experience who understands the complexity, coordination, and attention to detail required for luxury custom homes and commercial construction.
Position Overview
The selected contractor will work remotely under the engineering oversight of Tensor Engineering’s licensed Professional Engineer.
Tensor Engineering will manage all client relationships, project coordination, and external communications. The contractor will focus on structural engineering design, technical problem-solving, calculations, drafting, and production of accurate, permit-ready deliverables for internal review.
Assignments will be issued on a project-by-project basis, with the opportunity for consistent, long-term collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
Structural Engineering & Design
- Perform structural analysis, engineering calculations, and design for custom luxury residential and commercial buildings throughout Florida.
- Develop structural designs for new construction, major renovations, additions, and modifications to existing structures.
- Design and analyze wood, structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and engineered framing systems.
- Design foundations, slabs, beams, columns, load-bearing walls, roof framing, floor framing, and lateral load-resisting systems.
- Evaluate gravity loads, wind loads, uplift, lateral forces, load paths, and structural connections.
- Develop structural solutions for complex architectural features, including large openings, long spans, cantilevers, open-concept layouts, and custom roof configurations.
- Perform structural evaluations of existing buildings and develop appropriate strengthening or modification details when required.
Construction Documents & Drafting
- Prepare structural plans, sections, elevations, schedules, details, and construction documents using AutoCAD (required).
- Autodesk Revit (Strongly Preferred): Proficiency in Revit Structure, including 3D structural modeling, BIM coordination, construction documentation, and integration with architectural and MEP models.
- Develop accurate structural calculations and supporting design documentation.
- Coordinate structural designs with architectural drawings and MEP systems.
- Identify potential conflicts, constructability concerns, and missing design information.
- Prepare drawing revisions and respond to engineering review comments.
- Produce organized, accurate, and complete deliverables suitable for internal engineering review and permitting.
Florida Code Compliance
- Apply the Florida Building Code, including applicable residential and building provisions.
- Design structural systems in accordance with applicable ASCE 7, ACI, AISC, NDS, and TMS standards.
- Perform wind-load analysis appropriate to Florida construction, including hurricane-prone regions and applicable exposure conditions.
- Design appropriate continuous load paths, uplift resistance, and structural connections.
- Address building department plan review comments and required structural revisions.
Project Execution
- Independently manage assigned engineering tasks and meet agreed project deadlines.
- Maintain clear communication with Tensor Engineering’s internal team.
- Provide regular updates on progress, outstanding information, and technical issues.
- Submit completed calculations, drawings, and supporting documentation for review by Tensor Engineering’s Engineer of Record.
