Job Description
Design Engineers, High Voltage Power Transformers (Electrical, Mechanical, Controls)
Fully remote, US · Three openings
The opportunity
We are recruiting for a US grid equipment manufacturer that builds power transformers the way the auto industry builds cars. US design. Partner factories overseas. Custom configuration late in the build. The result is lead times measured in months in a market where the norm is multiple years.
The company is backed by tier-one investors and already has a multi-hundred-million-dollar order book from US utilities, data center developers and renewable developers who need equipment now, not in 2030.
They are hiring three design engineers to work on HV power transformers up to 345kV, plus distribution units. One team, three disciplines. Your designs ship in months, not years.
Pick your seat
Electrical Design Engineer (10 to 15 years): Own the electrical design from customer RFQ through factory test. Design calculations, drawings and simulation in Ansys Maxwell and MATLAB. Customer design reviews where you explain the design and defend it. Root cause on test and field issues.
Mechanical Design Engineer (8 to 12 years): Own the tank, core and coil structure, clamping and cooling. Short circuit force, seismic, pressure and thermal analysis in FEA and CFD. Your drawings have to be buildable by a factory you do not sit next to.
Controls Engineer (7 to 12 years): Own OLTC controls, cooling control, protection and monitoring, including DGA, bushing and temperature sensing. Integrate with customer SCADA over DNP3, Modbus and IEC 61850. Schematics, panel layouts and factory acceptance testing.
What you bring (all seats)
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in electrical, mechanical or controls engineering, matching your seat
- Hands-on work on HV power transformers at 230kV and 345kV, and on distribution transformers (controls candidates: HV substation equipment is fine)
- Working knowledge of IEEE, ANSI and IEC standards
- Experience with US utility or industrial customer specs
- A clear communicator who works well across time zones and with contract manufacturers
Nice to have: Time on the factory floor and in test bays. Experience designing for a contract manufacturing model.
Why this role
- Real ownership on HV units at a company with a deep, growing order book
- Small team. Your call on the design, no committee
- Early enough to set the design standards instead of inheriting someone else’s
- A design-for-manufacturing model built in from day one, with monitoring as a feature rather than an afterthought
Skills
- Transformers
- ANSYS
- MATLAB
- built-in
