About the Role
Trojan, part of Buy It Direct, is looking for a Senior Web Designer with strong UI/UX and digital design experience to take ownership of the overall design direction, content presentation and user experience of our Trojan Commerce website.
This is not simply a WordPress implementation role. We are looking for someone who can step back and assess the website as a whole — understand what our business does, who our target audience is, what we are trying to communicate and what we want visitors to do.
You should be comfortable acting as a senior design adviser, not simply implementing instructions. We want someone who can independently identify issues and opportunities across the site’s structure, messaging, navigation, hierarchy, imagery and overall user journey, and recommend clear, commercially sensible improvements.
This includes the words as well as the design. You should be able to review headlines, page copy, tone of voice and calls to action and advise when content is unclear, too long, poorly structured or not appropriate for the target audience. We do not expect you to be a specialist copywriter, but we do expect you to have the confidence to suggest better wording, restructure content and challenge what is already there.
The successful person should be able to take a business objective or a rough brief and turn it into a considered digital experience — advising us what the site should say, how it should say it and how it should look, rather than waiting for detailed design and content instructions from us.
What You’ll Do
- Design Strategy & Creative Direction
- Take ownership of the overall visual direction and user experience of the website.
- Understand the business, its services, target audience and commercial objectives before making design recommendations.
- Review existing website pages critically and identify opportunities to improve their effectiveness.
- Advise on page structure, content hierarchy, navigation, messaging, imagery and calls to action.
- Challenge existing layouts where necessary and explain the reasoning behind your recommendations.
- Balance strong visual design with usability, accessibility and commercial effectiveness.
UI/UX & Website Design
- Design and improve modern, professional B2B website experiences.
- Develop clear information architecture, page structures and user journeys.
- Improve visual hierarchy, typography, spacing, layout, imagery and content presentation.
- Create responsive designs that work effectively across desktop, tablet and mobile.
- Consider how users scan, navigate and interact with commercial websites.
- Ensure consistency across pages, components and the wider website experience.
- Create wireframes, page concepts, mock-ups and high-fidelity designs where appropriate.
- Use design tools to communicate and develop design concepts.
WordPress Implementation
- Implement agreed design improvements within WordPress.
- Work confidently with Elementor or a similar WordPress page builder.
- Translate design concepts into polished, responsive live pages.
- Work within the existing website structure where appropriate rather than redesigning unnecessarily.
- Identify technical or usability limitations that may affect the proposed design and suggest practical alternatives.
- Maintain consistency across the website as new pages and improvements are introduced.
Ongoing Design Ownership
- Review the website proactively rather than waiting for detailed instructions.
- Identify areas that feel unfinished, inconsistent, unclear or visually weak.
- Recommend improvements based on design principles, user experience and business objectives.
- Take responsibility for the quality of your work from initial recommendation through to implementation.
- Work independently and manage priorities without requiring constant direction.
- Clearly explain your design decisions to stakeholders and respond constructively to feedback.
