Job Description
About the role
We are a growing heating, air conditioning and renewable energy company specialising in heat pumps and low-carbon heating solutions.
As the business grows, we are looking for an ambitious graduate or junior building professional to join our team and become an important part of our surveying and design function.
This is an ideal opportunity for someone with a background in Building Surveying, Construction, Architectural Technology, Building Services, Engineering or a related subject who wants to develop a career in the rapidly growing renewable-energy sector.
You do not need previous heat pump experience.
What matters most to us is that you understand how buildings are constructed, have a good eye for detail, are comfortable working with numbers and drawings, and have the ability and enthusiasm to learn.
We will provide training in heat-loss calculations, heat-pump system design, renewable heating technology and our internal surveying and proposal process.
What you will be doing
Your role will initially focus on carrying out residential surveys and supporting the design and quotation process.
This will include:
* Visiting customers’ homes to carry out detailed building surveys.
* Measuring rooms, walls, windows, doors, floors and ceilings.
* Identifying construction types and assessing the building fabric.
* Recording insulation, glazing, heating systems and emitters.
* Taking detailed photographs and documenting the property.
* Identifying areas where information is uncertain and determining what further investigation is required.
* Producing accurate room-by-room heat-loss calculations.
* Assessing existing radiators and determining whether upgrades are required.
* Assisting with heat-pump sizing and system design.
* Preparing technical drawings and system layouts.
* Producing clear, professional customer proposals and quotations.
* Liaising with customers to clarify information gathered during surveys.
* Working with our installation team to ensure designs are practical and buildable.
* Continuously improving our surveying and design processes as the business grows.
As your knowledge and confidence develop, you will take increasing responsibility for surveys, heat-loss calculations, system design and proposals, with the aim of eventually managing projects from initial survey through to final proposal with minimal supervision.
What we’re looking for
We are particularly interested in candidates with a degree, HND or equivalent qualification in:
* Building Surveying
* Architectural Technology
* Construction
* Building Services Engineering
* Mechanical Engineering
* Civil Engineering
* Energy / Sustainability
* Or another relevant built-environment discipline
However, the right attitude and aptitude are more important than having the exact qualification.
You should:
* Have a genuine interest in buildings and how they are constructed.
* Be confident working with measurements, numbers and calculations.
* Be comfortable reading floor plans and technical drawings.
* Have excellent attention to detail.
* Be organised and methodical.
* Be comfortable visiting customers’ homes and communicating professionally.
* Have good written and verbal communication skills.
* Be confident using computers and willing to learn new software.
* Be able to work independently while knowing when to ask for help.
* Have a genuine interest in renewable energy and improving the energy efficiency of buildings.
* Have a full UK driving licence.
Heat pump experience is NOT essential
We don’t expect a graduate to arrive knowing how to design a heat pump system.
We will teach you:
* Heat-loss calculation methodology.
* Heat-pump technology and system selection.
* Radiator and emitter assessment.
* Flow-temperature optimisation.
* Domestic hot-water system design.
* Heat-pump system layouts.
* Renewable heating design principles.
* Relevant industry standards and regulations.
* Our design, surveying and proposal software.
What we can’t easily teach is an instinct for how a building is put together.
If you can look at a house and start asking the right questions about its construction, insulation, windows, floors, roof and alterations, you already have a valuable foundation for this role.
The person we’re looking for
You don’t need to know everything.
In fact, we’d prefer someone who is curious, analytical an…
