Job Description
ABOUT US
Charleston Children’s Therapy Center is a pediatric therapy practice offering occupational, physical and speech therapy. We built our own practice management platform because off-the-shelf software kept failing our therapists and families. It’s HIPAA-compliant and runs our clinics every day: scheduling, documentation and goal tracking, intake, authorizations, insurance claims and payments, fax intake, payroll, reporting and AI-assisted workflows.
We use modern AI-assisted development tools, so much of the code is drafted quickly. Automated checks enforce security and HIPAA rules on every change. What we need now is a person who brings two things the tools can’t: clinical judgment and hands-on cloud and integration skills.
WHY THIS ROLE EXISTS
Our founder covers product direction and the practice. The gaps are:
-
Clinical reality checks. Does a workflow make sense to a therapist with a full caseload? Is a note, goal, plan of care or billing rule clinically and payer-correct?
-
AWS and production operations. Deployments, monitoring, access control, cost, and responding when something breaks.
-
Third-party APIs. Insurance clearinghouse (EDI claims, remittance, eligibility), e-fax, SMS, payments and email, plus the webhooks that connect them.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
-
Own the AWS side. Keep production healthy, including servers, the managed database, file storage, encryption, monitoring and AI services. Tighten access controls, watch costs, and help write and follow runbooks.
-
Integrations and APIs. Debug failed webhooks and API calls, read request/response logs, and work with vendor support. Help add or harden integrations with clearinghouses, fax, SMS and payment providers.
-
Clinical product partner. Review new features as a clinician would. Catch workflows that would frustrate therapists or break documentation, billing or compliance rules. Turn real clinic pain points into clear, actionable tickets.
-
Review and ship. Review AI-drafted code changes for correctness, especially clinical logic, billing math and data handling. Test changes in the running app and help get them into production.
-
Be the first responder for production issues, with clear notes so nothing gets lost.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Must have:
-
A clinical background: OT, PT, SLP, ABA/BCBA, nursing, or clinical informatics. Pediatric or outpatient therapy experience is a strong plus. Current licensure is not required.
-
Hands-on AWS experience (any of EC2, RDS, S3, IAM, CloudWatch, Lambda). You should be comfortable in the console and the command line.
-
API experience. You’ve called REST APIs, read JSON payloads, handled authentication and webhooks, and debugged why an integration failed.
-
Working knowledge of Python, the terminal and Git/GitHub.
-
A HIPAA mindset: you treat patient information carefully, by default.
Nice to have:
-
Healthcare billing knowledge: CPT/ICD-10, claims, ERAs/EOBs, authorizations, payer rules, or EDI X12.
-
Flask, SQLAlchemy or PostgreSQL experience.
-
Experience with therapy EMR/practice management systems (WebPT, Fusion, TheraNest, etc.) from the clinician side.
-
Experience with AI coding assistants, and the habit of checking their output critically.
-
CI/CD or Docker experience.
Who this fits: a therapist who moved into tech or informatics, a clinician who taught themselves cloud and coding, or a health-tech engineer with real clinical experience. We care more about judgment and reliability than years of experience.
ROLE DETAILS
-
Type: 1099 independent contractor. A signed confidentiality agreement and HIPAA training are required.
-
Hours: 30–40 hrs/week, flexible. Some overlap with weekday business hours (Eastern time).
-
Pay: $25–$40/hour depending on clinical, AWS and API experience.
-
Location: Fully remote, US-based. Being in the Charleston area is a plus but not required.
HOW TO APPLY
Send your resume and a short note (a paragraph is fine) covering:
-
Your clinical background, and how you ended up working with technology.
-
One time you debugged a broken integration or something in AWS: what was wrong and how you found it.
-
Something about therapy software you’ve used that frustrated you.
Pay: $25.00 - $40.00 per hour
Expected hours: 30.0 – 40.0 per week
Benefits:
- Flexible schedule
Work Location: Remote
