The company is a small, founder-led U.S. legal technology business that has significantly expanded its use of artificial intelligence over the past two years. As the team scales, this hire will be one of the early senior engineering additions and will have meaningful influence over the product and technical direction.

About the Role

The Senior Python Developer will build and own backend features across a Django and Django REST Framework (DRF) platform. This role is suited to an experienced engineer who has shipped production systems, works comfortably with significant autonomy, and has a strong understanding of both the capabilities and limitations of AI in software engineering.

The position combines backend development, API and data-model design, search infrastructure, data processing pipelines, cloud infrastructure, and practical applications of LLMs. The Senior Python Developer will also serve as a senior technical voice on architecture, code quality, and future product direction.

Key Responsibilities

• Build and own features across the Django and DRF backend.

• Design APIs and data models that remain performant as the platform scales.

• Develop and maintain ingestion and data processing pipelines.

• Work on search infrastructure designed to operate reliably under load.

• Help shape how the team applies LLMs to software engineering and product development.

• Evaluate practical uses of AI while understanding where AI-based approaches have limitations.

• Contribute to architectural decisions and technical direction.

• Maintain high standards for code quality and engineering practices.

• Work independently within a small, founder-led engineering team.

• Communicate clearly through written documentation and remote collaboration.

Required Qualifications

• Several years of experience developing production Python backends.

• Strong hands-on experience with Django, DRF, and PostgreSQL in production environments.

• Deep knowledge of AWS.

• Strong experience writing and maintaining Terraform.

• Experience building and operating serious production systems.

• Strong understanding of backend architecture, APIs, data models, and scalable systems.

• Strong interest in applying AI to software engineering, with a clear understanding of its strengths and limitations.

• Excellent written communication skills.

• Honest, clear, and effective communication in a fully remote environment.

• Ability to work independently and contribute with limited day-to-day support.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience shipping LLM-powered features in production.

• Experience with search relevance or search infrastructure.

• Experience working with OpenSearch or similar search technologies.

• Experience with AI-assisted software development workflows.

Compensation & Benefits

• Salary: $130,000–$180,000 annually, depending on experience.
